I dropped the tanks and just got started checking things. I removed the first sock that I won't need as I will have a filter in front of each electric pump it was bad anyway. I checked the reach depth of the first fuel pick up and find it is an inch from the bottom of the tank? I'm thinking they did this to make room for the sock? my thought is it would be a good thing to silver solder a 1" extension to the pickup? Maybe only a few gallons extra from dead empty but it shouldn't hurt? Any thoughts?

Just bend it down a little bit. Just a little, don't go too far. You do not want it rubbing on the bottom of the tank. Or you could just get some of the fuel submersible fuel hose (I can't remember the SAE spec number right now) to put an extension on the pickup. BTW that tank flexes over an inch when it us under 2 psi pressure. I suspect it also flexes with a full fuel load.

The fuel hose for submersible use is expensive,
It is imported from Turkey.
We are careful not to wast any on our In tank fuel pump kit.

To bend it enough to make a difference would require heating the pipe . I silver brazed a 3/8" elbow on it so it would face down rather then horizontal.
