Sooo, we bought our GMC in May and had barely driven it.
While going down the highway the oil pressure dropped to zero and it started to rattle and clatter. we had it towed to our local AAMCO because they had a big enough bay and were able to work on it (we had recently had them replace the leaking radiator and the carb).
They dropped the oil pan and found it had thrown a main bearings and found lots of sludge and metal filings. We were able to get a completely rebuilt 455 (balanced, blueprinted,...), they installed it and it ran beautifully!
Took it for a day drive to WI 3 weeks ago and got maybe 100 miles when the engine started to make chattering noise and the oil pressure dropped. We made it into a truck stop and had it towed from there.
It appears that it has suffered the same failure (WTF?) we are now waiting for it to get towed from Lacrosse WI back to AAMCO where it be repaired under warranty (hopefully!).
I'm somewhat mechanical but I'm still trying to wrap my head around the workings of this beast, as for my wife: I have averted the divorce by admitting the GMC is my fault and my problem :-I and she now says she will 'consider' riding in it with me again "some day" (that's progress!).

Rick, you are close enough to Canada that you might want to consider
speaking with Dick Paterson about a new motor. He is in Ontario. This is a
case of how many times do you want to cry. Personally I like the "cry once"
scenario. You are going to pay (and cry) a bit more for one of Dick's
engines but you will only cry once. You could also speak to Jim Bounds in
Florida. Using a properly developed GMC MH motor from either of these two
will make it a one and done proposition.
Thanks

If the engine was a quality rebuild and that is a big if. The folks that replaced it absolutely needed to flush the external oil lines and use a new external oil cooler or you will wipe out the replacement engine in short order. Just blowing the cooler out with brake fluid doesn't get it.

My suspicion is the external cooler also, I'll make sure it's all replaced this time if not by them then by me.
I'm a firm believer that the term "I know just enough to be dangerous" applies to me, unfortunately on the GMC I know less than that..... Guess that means I'm really in trouble!

Rick,
Sorry to hear of your bad luck, I see you note that the engine you got from AAMCO was balanced and blueprinted. If you don't mind it
would be of interest to everybody that frequents this forum to know how much you had to pay for that engine. Just the engine itself,
not the installation.
The reason I mention that is that what makes an engine run better / longer is quality of the parts and ATTENTION TO DETAIL. I
GA-RON-TEE that there is NO WAY IN HELL that a business that charges say $2500 for an engine can or will do as good a job as someone
that charges $5000!
How's that for demonstrating an acute grasp on the obvious!
By the way I bought a Dick Paterson Stage II engine from a gentleman in Canada that had gone through a fire. When I got it to
Houston I found that water had gotten into the cylinders so I had to disassemble it. I have been building engines since I was 18 and
as I removed each part I noted more and more things done 110% correctly to assure that the engine would run well and stay together.
I have been around here for about 5 years now and have heard about a fair few engines that blew that have been built by others but
NEVER one that Dick built!
As the saying goes - YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!
Dick will be attending the Amana Colonies GMCMI Convention, I see it's about 280 miles from Prior Lake, MN to Amana, IA C'mon down
and meet Dick and the rest of the "gang." We'll shout you a beer to commiserate your misfortune!
Regards,
Rob M.

Sounds like the installers may have failed to properly flush the oil cooler
and associated lines. Failure to do this usually results in all the crap
from the previous failure being introduced into the new engine as soon as
it is started.

Wasn't the engine oil cooler issue beat to death a while back? It s my understanding that the oil flows from the pump through the cooler first, then the oil filter, and then back to the engine. It was discussed here at the same time that most oil filters will go into bypass until the oil warms up. It was also mentioned by several that it is almost impossible to sucessfully flush a cooler with out special equipment. With all that info in hand it is obvious that even the best efforts could go wrong. Look at Ken's and Dan's experiences.
I agree that debris in the cooler should be dealt with, but I can't help but question the oil change recommendations of many shops for their rebuilt engines. Many are still of the opinion that it is ok to run the start up oil for several hundred or even thousands of mules before doing a change.

I accidentally hit send before I was finished. DOH!!!
So to pick up where I ended off in the oil change issue . . .
I feel that the initial cam break in should be done with a light oil (5w30 or even lighter) and the oil & filter dumped immediately afterwards. This reduces the risk of the filter going into bypass and it removes most of the break in debris while it is still in suspension. It would also catch any debris that dislodges from the cooler. The engine isn't under any heavy loads at this point so the cushion of thicker oil isn't as important provided the engine was put together with enough assembly lube.
In response to Rob's comment on the cost of a rebuilt engine.
In general you are correct but there are many engine builders that are as detailed in their work as the big pros but don't have the overhead of a big shop to cover. Therefore they can offer a better product for less $$ than the pros.
The question then becomes: does that happen? Not very often as it is human to ask market price for a product regardless of how much it actually cost to produce that product.
So can you REALLY base the quality of an engine on the price you pay?

It was discussed here at the same time that most oil filters will go into bypass until the oil warms up. It was also mentioned by several that it is almost impossible to sucessfully flush a cooler with out special equipment. With all that info in hand it is obvious that even the best efforts could go wrong. Look at Ken's and Dan's experiences.

It appears that it has suffered the same failure (WTF?) we are now waiting for it to get towed from Lacrosse WI back to AAMCO where it be repaired under warranty (hopefully!).

First, I am really sorry to hear of the second engine failure in so few miles. Really discouraging.
If you come to Amana, have your wife talk to my wife, Ruth.
Let's just suppose a fellow
1. Added Spark Control to his fuel injection
2. And the fellow couldn't find a source for the wire plug that goes to the module
3. And the fellow decided to make his own.
4. And between Barstow and Needles the fellow's wife decides she will try driving
5. And the little home made plug comes loose
6. And the coach backfires so hard it blows a hole in the back of a muffler so big a small child could put his hand in it
7. And then the coach stopped
The fellow's wife might be upset and say she is never driving again.
The good news is that after a year or so, she is driving again and has passed the "Ladies let's drive that coach." class at Du Quoin.
Better days are ahead.

Thanks George glad to know I'm not alone!
I read your post to my wife and got a laugh and a smile (progress!).
