Just a note to say how much I am appreciating being here.
I have got my 78 Kingsley parked under my mechanic's favorite tree, and he's looking for ways to turn it into a boat payment.
Our latest issue is trying to stop the oil leak(s) at the filter bracket and cooler adapter. My job is to chase parts, while he does the thinking.
My parts sources could not come up with a good p/n for the adapter to bracket gasket. And the "seal" specialist could not find a good fit for the weird size.
LO -- a search of this board pointed me the easy solution. I will post up in a bit where to get the seal/gasket/O-ring, but in the meantime, anyone care to guess?
Thanks!

Use the O-Ring from the same size oil filter that you install during an oil change. Usual suggestion, when changing the oil filter, remove the ring from old oil filter and replace the old one on the top of the adapter to the block. Need not do it every oil change, some suggest doing the swap every other oil change.
You can always buy a new Fram oil filter, strip it of the o- ring, and throw the rest of the filter away. Friends don't allow friends to use Fram.
BTW, I do not believe that there is an actual part number/gasket specifically for this junction. Probably is, but why bother?

Yup, Take a useless fram oil filter, rob the top gasket, throw the rest of
the useless thing away, take the appropriate sized wrench to the big hex
hold down nut in the center, pull the upper part down and dig the old
gasket out of the groove, replace with the fram gasket, put her back
together, screw on a new wix or your favorite brand of filter. Hand
tighten, fill your sump with oil and start the engine, check for leaks and
it is 0'BEER THIRTY.

What you're saying, then, is that the cylindrical tin piece inside the box is really just packing material to hold the valuable rubber seal? Sounds good to me!
Thanks for the tips, guys, and you're 100% correct, that's the same advice as was turned up in my search.

There is another gasket (flat) between the block and the oil filter adapter. It doesn't leak as often.

For whatever reason, NAPA was able to find that one on their shelf. Interestingly, the one that came out was metal, whereas the new one is fiber.

I take that back -- my NAPA gasket did not fit (as I'm sure you surmised) and I am on my way to Jim Ks this instant. Thanks for the pointer even when I was "too smart" to use it!

Best to just make your own. It is a very simple gasket and this is what I
did after the replacement failed. Use permatex on both sides.
