Recently someone posted a link to a really well built Mid-Engine Ford
Fiesta. http://www.overbeckmachine.com/Fiesta/
The owner used a TH-425 with a plethora of mods, one of which was a custom
TruTrac locking diff.

I was perusing the web tonight and stumbled across a discussion with the
owner where he divulges the basics of how & what he did.

Here are a few snippets of his comments:

"Wonderful buildup. What posi did you get to fit into a Toro / Eldo FWD box
?
>
I used a eaton 9" ford 31 spline trutrak from summit. bushed carrier bearing
area to use stock toro bearings and made a spacer for the ring gear. while
I was
at it I put a set of 3.70's in from the motorhome guy in fremont/Milpitas
can
post a pic if needed. wanted something standard. had to make new 31 spline
axle
stubs.

The Trutrac I used is DTL-913A586 31 spline thats summits part number."

The guy also mentions that Mickey Thompson was rumoured to have made a few
Aluminum Diff housings for the TH425, but he has had no luck finding one.

I've tried contacting the guy to see if might be willing to share a bit
more detail on the mods needed to get the truetrac in the TH425 diff
housing. If he responds, i'll share the details here.

Walt Hally and Gary Kosier are working on one for me to complement or
Limited slip unit.
Keep in mind, front wheel is very sensitive to lock up units.
If you have money to throw at the project see me and see how we can work
together or not.
There is always a problem with the engine being up against the final case
and you limited by where the trans.

Looking at the pictures, he doesn't have the engine up against the final drive. There is a long spacer between the engine and the bell-housing. The spacer is long enough that the engine is forward of the final drive.

I AssUMe that this 'odd' configuration was to get the weight as low as possible, while balancing it between the front and rear. While not really something we could do for our GMC's, it is interesting.

Now I need to find and read the text. Rolling Eyes

Les,

The TrueTrac is kind of a dead issue at this time. Putting the TrueTrac
into the
Tor final drive housing is a piece of cake. The problem is the axle shafts.
Wayne Overbeck made his own. That autocross car is a bit of a special.
We have inch and a half diameter 33-spline axles. Much larger than the
Ford 31-spline axles. The only side gears with the 33 splines are the ones
for the 14-bolt 3/4 ton Chevy truck. Eaton says they won't match up with
the
worm gears in the Ford trueTrac. Also, the boss where the left side bearing
goes on the Ford is only 1.875". If you bored it out for our axles. there
would
be less than 3/16" of material left. Making new axles to fit the Ford would
make the whole project way too expensive. Darn, double darn!

Thanks for the info. I put the Info I found up here to give some food for thought. I was thinking that a Ford type LSD with clutch plates would be a better choice than a trutrac. Now that you point out the major issues, it is obvious that this type of install would only possible for someone with a machine shop and lots of free time.

Les,
I have many people that contact us with valuable information and we also
reciprocate.
Since were helping out with the Land Speed Record GMC coach, I have picked
up some valuable information and concepts.
October 3 will be the date that they plan on being at the Salt Flats to go
130mph.
They will be running our 3.70 final with our Limited slip differential and
the QuadraBag system and will look sharp with our new Frame less Curved
Glass side glass.
Their engine will be running 6,000rpm +
The short distance that they need to accelerate to that speed should cause
those front wheels to spin on the salt.
I have some business to conduct in Salt Lake city on my way back from the
Iowa convention, so I might be there when they make the run.

Johnny,

Let Krazy Kanomata drive the LSR GMC? Are you nuts? If they're aware of his record with his Caddy 500 they won't let him anywhere
NEAR the LSR coach let alone drive it! ;-)

Hell we better warn them, how do we contact them?

Nonsense... hole shots in a GMC are de rigeur for LSR machines.  Or as we used to say back in the day of sequential christmas trees, when the lights come down, money talks and bull$hit walks.  Our man be talkin'.  He should drive it.

I'm really a Chicken Ca main, one thing to drive 93mph in Idaho and ask the
patrolman to write the ticket for 65mph. He did what I asked.
Gary, you must have dropped my name to him as he contacted me and now I'm
throwing parts to help.
These guys are way too smart and know how Orientals drive.
You know that Orientals drive through Red lights, as Red is sign of good
luck.
I'm getting our guys in our shop to get the Turbo Cad unit ready for the
trip to Iowa.

Steve,
Whenever I show up with my Caderac (Onamental version of a Cadillac)
No one pays any attention. When I show up with a van, they scorn me to
death.
I will know for sure Sunday as to what I will drive to the convention.

We have a syndrome in Atlanta we call D.W.O., or Driving While Oriental.  It is actually that first dangerous six months of driving at all.  We see a lot of medical and hi tech Asians who come here as post docs.  Take a guy who is a genius in his field, he's maybe 30, comes here from Harbin or Mumbai or the like.  He finds that at his stage he's living in the 'burbs and driving to the med center or the office in Atlanta traffic each day - and since he's from a huge city, he's never even owned a car before.  It's carnage.  I'm told they're statistically like 16 year olds whio just got their license.  In both cases, if they survive the first six months or so they dio well, but a frightening number bend cars in that period.  We ought to issure them with GMC coachs, then we'd see them coming.

Remember, the salt flats are safer than Idaho highways - more room to duck.

Johnny,

Helen and I lived in Hong Kong for almost 10 years. There is a SPECIAL hand signal used there - the driver (or passenger) stick
their hand out the window and wave it around in any direction. Up / down - backwards / forwards - round and round.

It means - WATCH OUT I'M GOING TO DO SOMETHING REALLY CRAZY!

It isn't a big problem for other car drivers as you're surrounded by a lot of metal. HOWEVER, if your on a motorcycle - WATCH OUT!

Regards,
Rob M.
