I finished up the manifold installation today between soccer games. I
ended up putting it on without the center bolt as several have suggested.
It sealed beautifully with Remflex gaskets. New bolts all around
including spring bolts and new donuts. Generous anti-seize so the next
time should be easy.

While reassembling, I think I may have a theory on why the center bolt is
there. It is just for faster assembly. The center bolt hole fits the
bolt shoulder exactly. The other four are over sized. If you start with
the center bolt, the whole assembly is centered and balanced making the
other four easy to start. Without the center bolt, you have to shift it
around awkwardly. From this point forward, we should officially call the
center bolt "the optional manifold assembly bolt".

Mike, what torque did you use and did you use any sealant with the Remflex gaskets?

Thanks

The Remflex package says to use 20 lbs. I guess they used to say 15-18.
I did 20 then ran it through a few heat-cool cycles and then tested torque.
They are probably closer to 21-22 lbs now. I did not use any sealant
and it is not recommended. For the LH side, I torqued the center bolt to
just over 15 lbs as many have recommended here. I only have about 60
miles on it now so can't say anything about how it holds up. I am a bit
concerned that the low torque may contribute to the bolts backing out on
their own. If they do I will go for one of the manifold bolt locks...

Mike or anyone,

The exhaust pipe has somewhat of a flex connection where it joins the exh manifold, but no where else. Yes, the exh pipe can be forced to flex a small amount, but maybe not enough for the engine movement and since the exh manifold bolt torque is minimal, could the manifolds be shifting back and forth creating wear on the gaskets and leaks?

I think that if we where to add a short section of flex pipe, one on each pipe before the "Y", giving the pipe that much more flex to match the engine flex, maybe the problem of leaks could be further reduced or eliminated.

I don't have exh leaks yet, and I'm thinking of doing the flex section. Has anyone else already done this? Please chime in.

Yes, I have done this to both of my GMCs.
I have a flex after the y and before the frame on the side ( I will go look
for pictures)

I did this to take the flex, and pressure off of the headers.
I just told the muffler guy to do it

JimK may have the flex available

Because the Thorley header flanges are so crude, I put hi-temp silicon on them and bolted the 2 sets of headers to each other with the Remflex gaskets in between. I left them 24 hours and then put hi-temp silicon between the gaskets and the heads and just snugged the bolts up and left them 24hrs. Then I torqued them to 20lbs. I used SS flex pipe to separate side pipes. The flex split in a few 1000 miles, so I went to a 3" exhaust. That was several years and 20,000 miles ago. No leaks, YET.
I carry a spare set of Remflex and bolts, which have been used twice but other guys at rally's to fix their leaks. One of our club members lives close to the Remflex plant and buys us the gaskets for $20.00 a set.
