I'd like to be able to plan a trip with a predetermined number of miles per day. (Going to a rally, like to do no more than 400 miles a day, what are the available campgrounds/Walmarts/parks at the end of each day?)

Anyone got a suggestion (not Streets & Trips, I'm a Mac Book guy)?

I always found Trailer Life's Campground Guide to be the best source for info.

Our travel style was to leave the CG around 9am, drive til about noon
stopping, when possible, at a scenic spot for lunch. Then about 2pm I
would ask Jan to find a spot about 1 hour drive time down the road and
we would usually pull in about 3-3:30. Never needed to make advance
reservation, except on major holidays. Always picked a spot on the
west side of large cities, if heading west and vice versa if heading
east. This kept us out of morning commuter traffic. Usually picked
Good Sam rated parks when on the road, Thousand Trails or National
Parks, Military CGs when stopping for awhile. The CG Guide also covers
Walmarts and Camping World Service Centers.

We've had great success with the  Allstays Camp and RV App on our Iphone. You have the ability to filter Wal Marts , State Parks,  KOA's etc.. etc..

Gene, I just looked for Trailer Life Navigator and the writeup looks great. The only place I could find anything was on Amazon and it only sends you to one non-amazon vendor. Even Trailer Life does not sell it and has no mention of it on their site. There are two reviews on Amazon. One says it is wonderful and the other says it is a waste of money - hard to use, inflexible, and requires add-ons to get all the function. Where did you get it and what is your opinion?

Armand,
Mine is the 2006 edition. I got it through Good Sam Club who publishes the Trailer Life Directory annually. It may be available to Good Sam members only; not sure.

Since Good Sam owns Camping World I'm sure it will be available there. Google G.S. for mobetta info.

The T.L. Directory ,similar to Woodalls, came with the Navigator on disk. I have since tossed the book but still use the Navigator when on the road out of California.

I complain about the program everytime I use it. But that is mainly because I'm not a techie and have never bothered to view the tutorial to find out how to properly use the program.

For a computer literate person like you, I'm sure the Navigator would be a snap and a useful tool.

I'm currently in St Joseph, Mo using the Navigator to find camping spots along the Oregon/California Trail across Nebraska and Wyoming.

I'm hoping to do better than that Donner fella and his party who left here a few years ago.

Gene, I am a member of Good Sam and, therefore, Camping World but neither one of them knows anything about the product any more. I think I remember Good Sam ads for it but not any more. Maybe problems with it?

We are currently in Indiana and heading for Milwaukee before heading back West to the GMCWS rally in Utah. We use Streets and Trips but very frustrating program too.

Gene, I forgot to mention that we like to do fewer miles per day and take the time to smell some roses. Trying to drive for a couple of days but no more than about 300 per day and then take a day off from driving every couple of days to see and area or just rest. We are resting today - in Monticello, Indiana - and doing a little laundry.

You are leaving awfully late in the season. If you don't get clear of
emmigrant rock by the first hard freeze, you could be in serious distress
before you clear the rocky mountains. I hear game is scarce up in the high
country this time of year. Be sure to take plenty of provisions and
blankets.(grin)

Dang, I guess I am just too young and wild. I fly by the seat of my pants, when traveling. I guess that is why Teri squirms in her seat over there. We have done 800 miles, but would rather just drive til I am tired. One night from here to Safford, Az. is always my goal. Teri is not happy with that so we have been known to stretch it to two nights, three if she is lucky. I do keep my eyes open for appropriate sleep over spots. Tried a rest area once. That lasted 20 minutes and we were on the road. Did not feel safe there.
Now that I have turned 58 years of age I guess I will soon be slowing down a bit. I dread those 300 mile days like Dave G. did.

Dan,

For Christ's sake - YOU'RE RETIRED why the hell would you want to do 800 miles in a day! You have a doctors appointment where you
were goin'? Where they givin' away money where you were goin'? Maybe it was ICE CREAM?

You made to 58 now slow down a bit so you'll make it to 68! ;-)

Teri's RIGHT!

We circle the USA once a year. We try to drive 250 miles a day and stay a minimum of two nights per stop.

In this way were are never in a hurry. Five hours on the road daily. Leave a campground by 9am and be at the next one by 2 or 3 in the afternoon.

This way we get at least one whole day to investigate an area.

It took me years to fully understand that the fun of a motorhome was not in the driving of it. It is the destinations that it takes us to.

John, I love your formula. So far we have settled on the 9 to 2 or 3 style unless there is something to drive a little extra for on any day. Stopping for two nights sounds good and we are going to try that next trip. It seems like there is always some event that does require schedules to get to and is the case again on this trip.

Armand,

Helen and I are NOT morning people we're usually under way by the crack of NOON! ;-) We drive for three / for hours and for the last
hour Helen will find a RV camp to stay. If the place is nice we'll stay an extra day.

Currently were at the Rafter J Ranch near the Crazy Horse Monument and tonight makes night 3. It is REALLY peaceful and quiet.

BTW - The clear coats on - acrylic colors bought - painting to commence shortly! ;-) Gotta be ready for Amana!

Rob M.

Jim, we do great when geocaching. Last time it took us 3 days to get across Tx. while geocaching the two lane roads. We may do a little caching on the way to Amana, not sure yet. Depends on when the board meeting is. Geocaching takes us to places we would never see otherwise and we both enjoy that.
Rob, I had 3 grandchildren waiting for me in Safford, that trip. I had not seen them in a year. 800 first day and 600 the second. That was in December and it was stinking cold across Tx on I- 20 and 10. Teri had made us wait til Xmas to leave and it was snowing. We had a grandchild born the day before, here, and could not talk her into leaving any earlier.
I see myself becoming more like Armand and the rest of the older crowd. Not sure I am going to like it though. John Ruff is not really old enough to travel like Armand. Very Happy And Rob, you stop when Helen tells you to stop. Shocked
Sorry for hijacking the thread. Got tired of polishing the Alcoas.

Rob, that sounds even better but we (actually I) are more morning than evening so going by 9 or 9:30 and stopping by 12 or 1 would give us time to see what's next but not to get very far. This would be good in some areas of the country like Oregon and California but not so good in others - like Nevada, Texas, Nebraska, etc.

Armand,
Here's a link to an Amazon seller for the 2012 version of Navigator.

http://www.amazon.com/Roadtrip-Navigator-2012-Trailer-Life/dp/B007ILF46O

We stayed in a GS Park in St Joseph,Mo. last night. I went to the office before leaving this a.m. and got the new GS sales brochure. It contains no info about the Campground Navigator but it lists other membership benefits, such as: Good Sam Mobile App-RV Campground Finder- free for Iphone users. and Online RV Trip Routing.

Maybe thats their new direction. Moving to online and smart phone apps. If so they're leaving me behind.

Tonight we're in the campgroud at Ft. Kearny, Nebraska State Rec. Area. Following the Oregon Trail- Found the campground using the Trailer Life Navigator. Surprised my self.

Connected through Virgin Mobile MiFi as discussed by Gene Fisher and Terry Taylor at the Casa de Fruta rally. Slower than I like but its working. Thank you very much.

I still have the original disks for The Navigator- there appears to be no limit to the number of times it can be loaded.

If you or any one else would like to test drive the program, I'll bring the disks to The Treasure Island/ Blue Angels Rally next month. (If I get home in time) Or I can mail them to you and you can try it out before you buy the program.

Enjoy the rest of your trip.
