If you want an education on auctions, sit in a front corner and watch the crowd, while listening carefully to the auctioneer. Good ones don't even use shills, they take the bids "off the wall." Make 2 or 3 very quick bids, at the start, and quit. Have a friend watch the crowd while you are bidding. Don't bid again. Watch the performance of the spotters. They will jump on you with all their pressure tactics, if they are stuck with no real bidder. The second time you try this, they will be very slow to even recognize your bid. If they quick hammer it. Get up and go to the washroom. An employee will often meet you coming out and tell you the buyer defaulted, and you can have it for his bid, or some figure higher than your last bid. Finally it will be offered to you at your last bid.
Vehicles at "collector auctions", especially ones with "no reserve" have a funny habit of ending up in the collection, until the next auction. Check the title for the seller's name the first and second time? Often they are the same.
This is the Collector Auction "business".
Independent Auctions like Ritchie Bros, are for real.
