My Chinese Michelin jack is fading into the sunset so I'm looking for a replacement (no rebuild available). Harbor Freight's sale flyer shows several on sale. Is it worth it to spend the big bucks on an American made jack if you can find one, or is it smarter to buy the cheaper Chinese jacks and trash them every few years when they fail. It seems you can buy three cheap ones for what one American made jack will cost. What's the consensus? Also, what is the prevailing thought on aluminum jacks? Are they up to the task or likely to break in the process? HF has them on sale for less than $200. The older I get, the heavier my steel jack gets. Has anyone got a recommendation on what jack to buy?

My Costco jack lifts the front of the coach or one side of the rear no sweat.

I have had a Craftsman 3-1/2 ton floor jack for about ten years. IIRC, it cost me about $100.00 when I bought it. I have driven one ton dually construction (utility bed) trucks for the last 30 years and needed to have something to lift them with. It will lift the front end, from the center of the cross member, or either side of the rear, without a problem. The only thing I have ever had to do to it is add hydraulic oil a few times.

With tools, I'm of the opinion that I'd rather have just the one that I can rely on, than three cheaper versions that I only might be able to.

Years ago I picked up a dual piston Heim Warner 4 ton for $75. There's an
outfit in San Diego that rebuilds them but so far it has not been needed.
I have an alum low profile from HF. POS, and always has been. I have an
old HF Allied that hasn't failed in 20 years. Maybe the Chinese are
outsourcing now.

I inherited a BIG Blackhawk. Heavy as a tank, probably stronger, but leaks
like a sieve. I want to order a seal kit for it but the price is about
$120 and they won't even tell me what it includes! I guess I should tear
it down and see; maybe a common seal would fix it.

I had a HF alumimun jack explode while holding up one side of a striped 26 shell. Shell was completely gutted, basically just a body.
No one was under it, and wood blocking caught it on the way down.
Never again.

My HF aluminum jack has worked fine for light loads, but I don't know if I would trust it for use on the GMC. I love the light weight of the thing, but I still have my 30 year old heavy duty jack (that also leaks and could use a rebuild) that I use when I need to lift the GMC.

Though they usually just require a few new seals, I would prefer to find a good outfit to rebuild the jack, but can't find one in the Chicago area with good reviews.

You will normally just find "O" rings in a jack. Some times you need a square section ring on the pump shaft.
You need to cut the base off some and re-weld it, too.

I have a jack I bought in 1974 that still lifts the GMC easily. Just threw out a Chinese jack a month ago which was left to me by a pal last year.

Just do a search on Google for "American made floor jacks"
You will find a small number available and they can be a bit pricey.

OTC, Hein-Werner and Shinn Fu Company of America are just a few of the
ones left.

Jon, Bruce,

Thanks for the links. I looked earlier, but must not have looked right...

Due to the surfaces I normally have to deal with, I am more interested in bottle jacks more than floor jacks. But I found them on the sites linked also.

as an example:
<http://www.goestores.com/storename/usjackco/ViewDept-276436.aspx>
From looking at the descriptions/prices, I like the 8 ton model, but need to check to see if it meets my requirements for size/shape.

I knew SOMEONE had to have quality jacks, because a professional, making their living with the tools, couldn't put up with the quality I have been able to find. Yes, quality jacks are at least 3 to 4 times more expensive that the cheap ones... plus I'll have to cover the shipping. I do know that none of the stores local to be carries American made jacks of any type... or price.

Too funny, A Kraut and a Chinese Guy making jacks is OK, as long as they immigrated shortly after my grandfather!

But then my grandfather was a German who escaped to Poland, then Scotland, when WWII started.

It is a simple matter. ISO, INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS ORGINATION, ASIA,S
answer to SAE. quite frankly sucks. DIN Europe,s answer to
standards, weights, and measures, does most things very well. Both din and
ISO are metric, but are not held to the same tolerances. Krauts win, hands
down. Imho
