I tried a Toro mech fuel pump with the return line some time ago and found it did not stop the vapor lock as it was supposed to do. An electric fuel pump just forward of the selector valve that I turn on only when needed does stop it. This three thousand plus mile trip is a good example. While in Canada where we could run on no ethanol gas I never experienced vapor lock even pulling the 13% grades or the 11% 20km grades when it was hot. Got back to the states on premium crap gas and experienced vapor lock on long hills when hot. Flip on the electric fuel pump and the vapor lock instantly stops. Flip it off at the top of the hills and continue on. Works for me.

Wouldn't it have been simpler to use the Toro pump with the return already
built in? Very little likelihood of vapor lock from the mechanical pump up
to the carb.

I suspect your results would have been the same with the more complex bleed
from the carb input filter; perhaps worse since it does not utilize a
calibrated orifice, as I suspect the Olds pump does, to ensure that not too
much pressure is lost. Ain't no substitute for pressure to keep gasohol
from boiling. :-)
