Does anyone know the amount of fuel burned at idle over the course of an hour for the 455 and the 403 ???

Looks like nobody knows (for sure), Miguel. But, I seem to remember hearing that it was a toss-up between running the 455 at idle, and running the Onan, to recharge batteries. IF that's true, that would mean about 3/4 to a gallon per hour. It kind of makes sense as you would have 8 cylinders at about one third the RPMs of the two on the Onan.

well GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR, i was hoping, the reason i ask is because i flowed an onan and really was floored to see almost 1 1/2 GPH, i just could not see it so, i tested another one i had at the shop and not as bad, a little over a
GPH, but, when i test run in a 455, i can run it at 2000 RPM for cam run in, ...(yes, i use flat tappets and only use dello 400, no problems so far) but wow, running it in for an hour at different speeds i use a bit of gas but, once i am done with the run in, i swear i burn about 3 .5 GPH at idle. the 403 is not so bad but i was just wondering if there was any data, my fuel flow meter i have is for the onan, i have not tried it on the 455 or 403

I did some poking around, and saw estimates of between 0.6 and 1.0 gallons per hour (with the 1.0 gph figure assigned to a Pontiac 455, apparently with an actual measurement). That does compare fairly well to an Onan, assuming that your charger or buzzbox can put out 40-45 amps, and that the alternator on the 455 can put out 80 amps. So at least for deeply-discharged batteries, the gas used shouldn't be horribly different (burns twice as much gas for half as long).

Now as to which motor I'd rather wear out... I'd probably opt for the Onan. With reasonable maintenance it should last many thousands of hours, and the cost of an overhaul (or more likely replacement) will be a small fraction of the cost of a new or rebuilt V8. Plus, with the low-restriction 3" exhaust, my 403 is a LOT noisier than my Onan - cool-sounding, but noisier.

The specs on my 6500 Emerald Plus Onan call for fuel consumption of 0.4gph at no load, 0.7 at half load, and 1.3gph at full load. I'd guess that the load for just charging the house batteries would be very, very close to the no load figure of 0.4 gph(since the output necessary would be in the 10% load range).

Miguel,

That's a thirsty Onan you have! A couple of years ago I wanted to know the fuel consumption of my Onan 6000 so I did an experiment and posted the following:

======================================
Since I was going to be working on the GMC today I figured I would find out for myself what the fuel consumption of the 6000 Onan is. Here's what I did:

I used a large Belvedere vodka bottle which is 60 ounces (just under 2 quarts) to the brim. I took some fuel hose and connected it to the Onan, stuck the other end into a gas can, and got the Onan warmed up running a 13.5K Carrier lo-profile air conditioner. After a few minutes I moved the hose to the gasoline-filled vodka bottle and started the timer. The bottle was empty in 58 minutes.

I put the hose back into the gas can, refilled the vodka bottle with gasoline, and started the second air conditioner, a 13.5K Penguin. Moving the hose to the bottle and restarting the timer, with both airs running the bottle was empty in 41 minutes.

So, with one A/C running the Onan 6000 uses a half gallon an hour. With both airs running it uses a bit under 3/4 gallon an hour.
==========================

The Onan has the type 1 points, no fancy electronic stuff here!

Some day I will have to do this experiment with the 455.

... and Bob - so as not to impart any un-needed alcohol into the gasoline I hereby volunteer to thoroughly clean out any future bottles you might require.

Although I prefer gin...
