I have been using the Howell TBI system for many years. This past
summer I started having fuel pump problems. Replacing the fuel pump
with my spare seems to have solved the problem. But I am thinking
that it would be nice to have two fuel pumps, one for each tank, so I
can just throw the switch if I think I am having fuel pump problems.

Do these fuel pumps have internal check valves? If so I can just 'T'
the outlets together and not have to worry about back-flow through the pump.

If the pumps do not have internal check valves, what would be a good
check valve (suitable for use in a fuel line).

What is the make and part number for the pumps Howell is using on the
new TBI systems? I have the older style pump (Airtex E8228). I tried
to order a new spare and they are no longer avalable.

Summit racing has several fuel check valves listed on their website. I know that Carter also makes some, but I don't know if they're rated for low or higher pressures. I don't think it should really make a difference, but I can't say for sure.

Dave,

I can't believe the E8228 is NLA; neither can Summit:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ATX-E8228/

And eBay shows 7.

But that's not what I'm using now. I was always a bit uneasy with the high
output pressure of the E8228 so when I found a great deal on a low pressure
pump (18 psi, IIRC) sepecifically for use with GM TBI, I installed it. I'd
expected to need to change the regulator setting, but didn't.

I'll try to find the number in my files, but you should be able to find one
by checking 89-90 GM vehicles.

Ooops, I forgot to give you this:

http://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-check-valves/=iyjn19

IIRC, this is the specific one I use:

7768K63 $13.12

I installed them regardless of whether the current pumps require them
just in case a future replacement might unexpectedly.

Hi Dave

When I put in my in-tank fuel pumps I removed my Airtex E8228. I also have a like new spare. When I buy a spare part I always install it to test it and them I remove it and put it back in its box to carry as a spare. So one of my two pumps is new but used for a few minutes. I believe I paid about $120 when I bought it.

If you or anyone else could use them, make me an offer for either one or both.

Most of the fuel pumps have an internal check valve so the outputs can be teed together without any external check valve. That is what I did with my in-tank pumps. I tested the pumps check valve to 90 psi and it held fine.

Emery, want to give a hands on presentation at Amana on installing the in tank pumps? I got two and will volunteer my coach.

I was also a little paranoid about the E8228, so went with a Carter P5001
instead. It's specifically for TBI so not as high pressure.
