Hi:
I've seen a number of macerator installs, and they all seem to preserve the standard plumbing for the 3" hose.
Any reason for this? I see a lot of posts indicating that they never have to use the hose and don't worry about it.
Plus, the clean out valve is way under the coach.
How does it work for you?
Dolph

Dolph,
I've never, in 10+ years, had to use the 3" hose. But the thought of
having to remove the mascerator for repair (it IS electrical and
mechanical, you know) with a full load of stuff behind it ensures that I
wouldn't for a moment consider NOT having a 3" alternative and a valve
close ahead of the mascerator inlet.

Ken:
So leaving that valve under the coach and not extending the 3" back to the bumper might be an acceptable alternative?
I don't think I would eliminate that valve, but if it's just in case (having to deal with the poo), then under the coach would be just fine?

I had the macerator seize up while on a trip several years ago. Turns out
the impeller disintegrated and the pieces wedged into the housing. If I
would not have had the 3 inch plumbed to the rear, that would have been a
very long week with 5 people. I had left the OEM valve between the tank
and macerator then added a second after the macerator T fitting. I was
able to climb under one time to open that second valve and continue the
vacation without having to do the repair on the road.

And if you're trying to dump a full tank, just where is that back flush,
etc, going -- out the roof vent??? (Without the 3" outlet, of course.)

My coach came to me with a macerator installed already. There is a valve at the rear of the tank, then the tee for the macerator, then another valve, and then the 3" pipe that originally went to the rear. I had to cut the 3" shorter in order to accommodate the through-the-bumper hitch, but it is still there. Although a little inconvenient, I could still crawl under the rear of the coach, drop that pipe down a little, and use it to dump in an emergency. Thankfully, in four years, I have had zero problems with the macerator, and have never needed to do that.

Our macerator was blowing the in-line fuse and even hardwiring it wasn't
working. There was probably too much pressure in the holding tank. The
macerator does have some sensors going into the pipe. Having the 3" tube
saved the day.

We kept a houseboat when I was a kid, the head was a 'Third Mate' model. My Dad had a sign made which we posted over it "Do not put ANYTING into the Third Mate which you have not already eaten". I think I'm gonna make one up for the Thetford, even though I don't have a macerator/pump.
