I met some real nice folks from Colorado.. AJ & Jean Gonsalas. Ms Jean had wanted a GMC since 1978 and AJ had never seen one. Her dream was a 78 Royale with dry bath and center kitchen. Seems They found one at a RV dealer here in Knoxville and called me off the Black list. Would I look at it and maybe get it ready to drive back to Colorado 1300 miles. Sure. My fist impression of the coach was to tell them it was a piece of crap and buy it myself.. but no It was in really good shape for the money. New airbags and 1 new extra, new ac compressor and lines, new windshields, excellent interior, onan and acs worked, new brake lines and calipers and pads, new fuel lines, fan clutch, water pump. Well they flew in and bought it and we started looking close, freeze plug leaking in front of head, no problem, tires were new in 96, so spend all day finding 7 16" steel wheels and new 225x75x16 tires. Drove very good but ride height was off and had to repair one leveling valve and set ride height, drove great. Pulled the front wheel bearings and replaced LF added grease zert and put it back together, RF had a bad Knuckle, and had been peened before to tighten race, replaced it and bearing and added zert. RF lower ball joint was also replaced. Back bearings looked good, new grease and advised brake shoes needed to be put on the list as it had rivited shoes instead of bonded but were not bad and the brakes did work very well. Replaced alternator. Only wide fan belt I could find was AZ dorolast cheapie belt, but he had PO spares..
Of course there was a bunch of little stuff but no real issues.
So they headed out, got a call in Ky the coach quit, wont turn over, batttery is dead. He had called good sam and came out and tightened the new belt and charged battery. Back on the road.. Got a call in Kansas, back of coach was down and would not pump up. Again called good sam and got directed to a feller that put shrader valves in the bags and pumped him up, then took them to NAPA to get a 12v cig lighter air pump and another set of belts just in case. They are Home.. Happy and now experienced GMCers. Hopefully they will show up here as I asked them to stop by and ask questions.

Thursday as AJ and Jean were leaving Dean & Cheri pulled in with their new engine for their 23' that has been here since Bean Station. Friday we set up the coach and started unhooking and had the engine out that evening. Sat we swapped stuff over, painted and cleaned and set the new engine in. Sunday I copped out since Mom needed a perm after dinner. Can`t do a perm on Mom with greasey fingers. Besides oil on the rolling paper don`t work good with the waving solution. Monday we primed the oil pump & fired it up and ran at 2000 rpm for 20 min then shut it down for 3 hrs. Went down and put $100 gas and took it around the big block. Next morning they were gone, with a stop at Blaine Merrells to drop off some stuff for me they were on to Portage, In. the next morning. No problems.. They are Home..

Yes Dan I got pics..

Chuck,

You are "somethin' else"! Make it all sound so easy! And I know it's not
so, in the temperatures we've been having, And your barn, great as it is,
is NOT air conditioned (unless you've done that too since I was there).
Sure hope all those lucky folks that call on your expertise are paying you
well -- free or nearly so just isn't fair when you do so much! And all
that on one leg!

Ken H.

Dude, what can I say? You are the kind of guy that makes life so good. I will never forget our first in person meeting. No doubt, you are one of the nicest people to ever show up around here. I appreciate all of the work you do for others.
Oh, thanks for the pictures. The barn, totally awesome. Can't wait to spend a day over there.

Ya`ll are sure welcome to come visit anytime. The Taj-ma-Barn still needs some trim work. How are you on a scaffold with a nail gun? Twisted Evil

Dan: I cut a 3" wide 1" thick piece of white oak to length on the ground and hand it to you. You center it over the crack in the vertical boards and nail with a gun. Easy as falling off a scaffold. Crying or Very Sad . Thanks tho its Not really something I would ask anyone to do if they have never worked on a scaffold before. I have 7 sets of 4' and have to work at 30' at peak.. I don`t like stacking singles that high.

Yes, Dean and Chuck are quite the team. What Dean didn't know Chuck usually did but Dean has a few tricks up his sleeve that you wouldn't know because he's so quiet. That's what Dean's supervisors at USSteel main garage like about him. They know that when they need a job done correctly and in a timely fashion just give Dean what he needs and leave him alone. He'll let you know if he needs anyone else to help. On SunnyB he did need Chuck's expertise and wonderful facilities . We are so blessed to have stopped by to see their house/barn after BeanStation as SunnyB's oil pressure dropped to 0 on the way and the numbers of an oil analyst suggested that we park her and come up with a game plan for what happened. So she ended up having a nice TN vacation until we could get down there with a newly rebuilt engine. The Boyd's accommodations and hospitality are heartfelt and genuine. I wish for them many good times, friends/family and blessings. A hug goes out to their friend Debbie who also helped(tool chaser/knows where everything is in the barn). Oh, and I hope y'all find that big ass spider lurking in the barn before he attacks someone. I tore everything out of SunnyB looking for more before we slept in her at the Merrells. lol!!!! A thank you goes out to Blain and Diane for the engine core and their heartfelt hospitality every time we go down there. And a special thanks to KenBurton for all his help, always. And to Laurie for letting him do all that he does for everyone. So, SunnyBeaches is now officially home in PortageIN with a trip with our dog FyonaMoonDancer and gbebe Ella to the beach and an ice cream and a sleepover in the side yard where she has her parking spot. Life is good! hugs and safe travels to all! Very Happy Cher

Yep, yall were in good hands all the way around. I have used the facilities at Blaine and Diane's several times. They are always smiling when I drive in and really smiling when I leave. Very Happy
Now, Ken, well, he just ain't always the smiling kind. But, he is a genuine person who will do anything for another gmcer. Have hung out at his hanger also while he repaired my air conditioner. Just the kind of people who own GMC motorhomes.
As you say, they make life good.
Dan
