I’d sent a note to my Congressman opposing ethanol in our fuel and the Government subsidy of the industry. His response was positive, though I didn’t know about the RFS - “Renewable Fuel Standard” mandate. Unless this is overturned I doubt we’ll see real gasoline flowing at the regular pumps any time soon. His response is below:

"Thank you for writing asking that I oppose tax subsidies for E85. As you know, the current tax credit for blending ethanol with gasoline expired on December 31, 2011. I support permanently ending this subsidy. Taxpayers have subsidized the ethanol industry for over 2 decades at a cost of tens of billions of dollars, including $6 billion in 2011. At a time of large deficits and calls for deep spending cuts to vital programs such as Medicare, Social Security, and education, we simply cannot afford to spend any more money on a mature industry."

"In addition, tax subsidies are unnecessary as the ethanol industry is already guaranteed a market by the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). The current RFS mandates production and sale of 9 billion gallons of ethanol a year and increasing each year until it reaches 36 billion gallons in 2022. There is absolutely no need for taxpayers to subsidize the profits of the ethanol industry while also guaranteeing a market for their pro duct."

Larry,

It may not be going away, but I have been collecting the percentage of ethanol for the last couple of years and Guess What?
Since the end of the ethanol subsidy, the amount has been going down and is now more commonly 6%.
