Well, I always drag things home which I call a classic and my wife calls junk. We started talking about selling our pop up camper and buying our first RV. She wanted something with lots of windows. I immediately thought of the futuristic looking GMC motorhome from my youth. I saw one going down I-40 through Nashville and was very impressed with it. I showed her some pictures and she liked it. I sold my pop-up camper and had the money to deposit in the bank. On my way I decided to go see this GMC, which the lady wanted way too much for. It looked rough on the outside, but when I entered it looked great! It had been previously restored and somewhat modified to a more open space. It had a plaque inside where 2 owners previous had won 3rd place in a national meet in the 90's. All the books and records were there. The coach could not be started as it had a broken fuel line, so I was buying a "pig in a poke." My rule of thumb is if you only pay parts value you can't go wrong. I made the lady a ridiculous offer-the money in my pocket from my pop-up sale. To my suprise she went and got the title. It had been her husband's who had died 3 years previous and she needed to get rid of it to get some closure. I had a mechanic come over who changed the oil, belts, fixed the gas line, drained the bad gas and we drove it home. It did need brakes and tires. The air works great and after replacing the fuel pump, the generator fires every time. After much buffing and polishing, my wife likes it as much as I do. We have used it to go campring every weekend. My 9 year old son wants to find and put the Davo bunk bed back in but otherwise we are ready to travel. Met the Dixielanders at Rally and they have been a wealth of information. I e-mail Chuck Boyd daily!

Your videos of the barn queen inspired me! I knew this coach hadnt been used in a few years and I figured if you could drive the barn queen home, we could move this one. That drive home was an adventure! My mechanic drove it and got on the interstate. With bad tires. Us driving it saved me a $250.00 tow bill so I appreciated his spirit of adventure.

@Dan,
At the moment, Dixielanders newsletter editor Tom Phipps has given me
an orientation on 'em. Work on them is currently at a standstill while
I work on clearing out some bills and debts and other projects that
have a higher priority (wife wanted a honey moon, wife wanted new
floors, and I retaliated by getting a new carb and fuel tank repair on
my 1968 Pontiac Catalina (I posted a video about that one).
Dana is actually INSISTING that I "finish" the Catalina before moving
onto the GMCs, although after seeing Tom's she is eager to get them
running as well. It's a weird feeling when one's lady is actively
campaigning FOR and SUPPORTING my vehicular lunacy instead of the
other way around.
Specifically, the batteries need attention, the black tank needs
replacing, the brakes need bleeding, assorted lines and belts need
replacing, it needs new tires, and the Onan needs to be installed into
the Royale. The Queen is going to need new wheels (or more liikely
will inherit the Royale's old wheels when I upgrade to 16"s, the dash
needs rewiring, and god knows what else. The interior is a disaster.
:) Soon, I will be able to direct fire from the Money Gun at the
various issues.
But, to bring this back onto topic, I look forward to seeing what
Meghan and her guy do with their coach. :)

The coach had an old brochure with the bunk beds shown so my son keeps on it. He was supposed to bring 5 favorite things to school and that GMC brochure was one of them. First person we met at the Dixielander Rally said he had one-and everything else we needed-on a parts coach he had. My son keeps asking "Did you call that guy?" He still needs to learn patience. He probably gets that from me.

Couldn't agree more. My wife has never bought into my Glastron boat obsession. Has forbidden the dismantling of any more parts boats. Apparently the neighbors and the homeowner's association finds that unattractive. My obsession for the GMC is matched and might even be exceded by hers. She NEVER stayed overnight in the pop-up. Now she keeps spamming me with pictures of other people's coaches that she has seen on this site. Actually, wants to replace the bifg ram on the side-is that Aries?-with a large peace sign. Can I wrap one of those Davo bunks up for my son for Christmas? We did decide to put the rear settee back in so we could send the kids back there. Another member is giving me one, with table- and delivering it from Denver Colorado! Lucky for us his son lives in Nashville. The generosity of people on this site and in this fraternity never ceases to amaze me. I thought the Glastron folks were generous but not to this level.

Robin,
I have an auto collision repair business and we pretty much stick to partial vehicle repair and refinishing. I have done a handfull of restorations through the years with the most extensive being a frame off restoration of a 72 Cheyenne 3/4 ton 4x4. I did the Cheyenne a little over ten years ago. I remember very clearly how hard it was to come in some mornings and face the continuation of a multi day repair on an isolated area of the truck ( the straightening of the dents in the ribbed bed floor comes immediately to mind!). When I finished the truck I did not enjoy driving it as I was afraid of wrecking it or someone scratching it in a parking lot I mean you could eat off the bottom of this thing. I finally sold it and swore off future restorations as the money and cycle time for collision repair is much more favorable. I currently have completed all suspension/ body/ power train work on the WarPig and I have to say that a complete restoration on a full size passenger car now
appears a simple small scale project in comparison to the coach. If you are a perfectionist and you own two coaches I would recommend that you pick the easier of the two to make functional and do so while you make the other one "perfect". Or better yet, find a screaming deal on a turn key coach and sell one of your current ones. That is if your goal is to USE the coach.
If I had waited a year and shopped I would be more than a year ahead right now with more cash to boot.

Welcome to the group/family/cult/asylum
It sounds like you did alright.
Before we get too far, log in to gmc.net and go to Account Settings, scroll way down and fill in a sig file so readers, know who you are, what your coach is and where you are. All these are valuable to any reader that may desire to assist you.
You are fast learning about the community that you have just become a part of and you will also soon learn that the coach become more a part of your family's life than just a toy that you happen to own. As a waterman, I liken it to the way a waterman relates to his boat. That being the case, I like to welcome new owners in a manner similar to the way a new owner or vessel is traditionally greeted. That being said,

I still think of myself as a new owner. but I just realized it has now been two years since I winched my GMC onto the flatbed, hauled it home, and the look and attitude of my wife when I unloaded the GMC in the driveway seemed like she was going shopping for a divorce lawyer first thing that Monday morning, and I had just towed in my new living quarters.
Here it is, 2 years later almost to the date. and My wife and two daughters(age 4 and 5) are going to take the GMC out on their own over 2 hours north, to go camping with a friend of my wifes from High school and her two daughters.
I attribute her going from hate to loving the GMC solely on doing everything i could to get and keep the GMC usable the last two years. It is not by far perfect. but we fix a little here and there as we go. Last summer we used it 30% of the weekends. This summer I think we have used it 75% of the weekends.
My wife has not really ever cared for my other automotive hobbies(volkwagens, jeeps). It is pretty cool she is enjoying the GMC. It is good to see others doing the same.

Amazing that the common ground in our marraiges is the GMC. I used to practice family law if anyone is threatened with divorce for bringing a GMC home, although bringing something in on a flatbed never goes over well.

its good to see the gmc on the road we use ours all the time we just came back from a trip to Tenn. in ours we did some white water rafting my kids and wife love it and its always fun to talk to people on the road about the GMC we have the bunk bed works great

It may be unwanted advice, but with all the talk about the bunk bed, it
seems appropriate: BE CAREFUL FOLDING IT! We've had more than one report
here over the years of people pinching fingers. One rather seriously.
