We have a bicycle rack in the hitch. Did not think anything else about it until a "friendly" law enforcement officer "informed" me that the rack blocked the license plate.

So...has anyone relocates the rear license plate? Ideas??? Etc....

Years ago my wife was stopped by a very friendly San Diego cop.
She was sited for blocking the tail lights on her V W with her bike.
Sue drove home removed the bike then drove to the local CHP office and had
it sign off.
In my wife case the cop just wanted to meet her or talk and she did not.
We carry our bikes on our hitch rack all the time and have never been
stopped.
I would not move the license plate.
It comes under a Fix-IT-Ticket
In California the CHP signs off with out charging you.
All is well with my Lord

Personally I'd just forget it. Almost always have bikes on ours that
blocks the plate. Cops have never said a word about it in 10 years.
Did he suggest you fix it or he's ticket you next time?

I tend to bend the laws I can so I'm less tempted to break the ones I
shouldn't. :^)

They can't see mine when I tow the car. I come through your area a good bit. If I get stopped I will just mention your name and hope they tell me to have a good day.
I have been in and around law enforcement all of my adult life. Some nice police officer was just having a bad day when he/she stopped you for that.

Should have put in some other info.

We live in Texas, we were stopped in Tennessee. I doubt I'll head to get the ticket dealt with...gas vs. fine...

Anyway, this is probably becoming more of an issue with red light cameras, speed cameras, etc.

I'm looking for a solution...I'll post what I find.

I'd "bet" the Tennesee cop knew you were from Texas (actually saw your plate) and knew you wouldn't come back to fight the ticket. Yeah, I know there is no quota.

I stopped by the local State Police Post with that exact question. I was informed that the license plate shall be on the rear of the vehicle and NOT on the rear of the load it is carrying.

I like it that way because the cameras on the Illinois Toll Road can not see my plate when I'm hauling my motorcycle on the hitch.

Your state law may vary.

Just wanted to post a follow up.

Found a genuine GM solution. Part number 12495709.

It uses a u-clamp to go around the hitch bracket and sticks out to the side...and just above the ground and below the the bumber.

It's a little bit lower than the hitch, but should be fine.

It also comes with a light that plugs into the trailer hitch 4wire connector.

Hey Jeff

Didn't you just get back from a trip to the East coast?
How about a trip report, sites seen, GMC problems, ideas for other changes needed.
