What a day today i was going to finish reassembeling the bottom of my motor. Pulled out the new oil pump pulled out the press in screen wrong screen. Parts store sent me a melling 22FS I needed the FS1.With the day i was having doing the oil pan front drain plug was out of the question So i decided to start getting the front clip ready to pull. Of coarse every bolt i touched was rusted and took 3 times longer to remove. Dodging short rain showers i managed to get the Grill, front dam, bumpers. bumper fillers, pass side inner fender.wheel skirts and one side of the headers battery tray. Not much but when i jacket the front end up my drivers side air bag blew no reason just blew i guess now on top of everything else i gotta do the airbag conversion. The frame was rusted more than i thought i was originally going to wait untill next year to do the swap but now im glad im doing it now rustout on both sides and really bad on pass side under the upper A frame holes about the size of a silver dollar. Im afraid it could have collapsed at any time. It didnt look that bad at first but i guess when it gets to a certain point it just accelerates. Some days I guess its better not to play with our toys if all we are going to do is break them.

Ted,

Sorry to hear your day wasn't one of the best. Heck of a note when working
on one end breaks the other though!

I didn't do a whole lot better: I had a "puff-puff" from the right front
cylinder -- probably where the Remflex gasket I installed 1100 miles ago
was cracked. The 1 hour gasket replacement took about 4. :-( As an
experiment, I did NOT install the new Remflex I just received. Since the
head and manifold surfaces are in excellent condition, I used the FelPro
out of the overhaul set. I'll carry the Remflexes as spared in case it
doesn't hold up.

I'd offer to come over and help pull the clip, etc., but now the schedule's
getting tight: We'll be leaving next Tuesday to pick up the grandson and
head on up to Crossville and then Oshkosh. Keep me posted & I'll come over
in August -- when it's sure to be nice & cool. :-(

Ken,

I ordered a set of these:

Maybe some day I'll get around to assembling the engine and using them! ;-)

No problem Ken it was just one of those days. Have fun at Oshkosh. I figure i will wait a few days untill my parts come in untill i get back with my toys. In the meantime i guess i will start gathering my parts for the Mark airbag conversion i like that one the most for parts availability. Was your manifold loose why did it leak with the new motor? Im still waiting for my intake gaskets from Jim K. to see what they are like and maybe use the SS plates to patern my intake for grinding and sealing.

Ted,

This will be only my second trip to Oshkosh and my grandson's first.
He seems to be developing an interest in aviation, so this may cement
that -- or wear it out of him. :-)

I think that's a wise air bag selection. One of our Dixielanders
independently developed almost the same design, using the same bags at
about the same time Mark was working on it. He's very happy with the
results.

No, the manifold wasn't loose -- far from it. In fact, I had a heck
of a time getting most of the bolts out and I can't figure why. I'd
chased every thread on the engine so after only 1100 miles, the new
bolts should not have been difficult to remove. Maybe I put LocTite
on them -- I just don't remember. But I re-chased them all twice.
The reason for the leak probably is that I installed a Remflex gasket
that had been cracked slightly. That's probably where the popped-out
section appeared. The mating surface on the Cad exhaust manifold is
not very wide, and the Remflexes are very slick, so I'm not surprised,
just disappointed.

I think you'll find that the SS plates are a little bigger than you
really want to make the recess in the head. I just run a Magic Marker
around the port to make a 1/8-3/16 wide guide to shoot for when I take
the router in hand.

If I'm not mistaken, Sully (Todd Sullivan) of
Seattle made a few improvements to Mark's
original design. Mark didn't really want to get
into the "business" of building up systems and
Sully has the capability to do that. Sully
installed the system on my coach at the Shawnee
rally as a demo for all.

Rides very nicely for the little I've driven it;
three round trips to local Discount Tire to get
new KMC Rock Star XD-775 wheels installed a pair
at a time. Did one pair a month to keep the bill
on my Mastercard down to a dull roar!

Hope I have remembered the history correctly!

Still building them. Give me a call for the solution to your airbag worries.
