Check and make sure that the dipstick tube actually connects to the oil pan. Mine broke off / rusted through and it caused similar symptoms.

I had mine sticking going back in. I finally made me a cable dipstick out of stainless cable and a rubber handle that you pull a small engine starter rope with. It probably cost me about $10.00
