I was heading to NY from AL and all of a sudden I could hardly stop. The
brakes were so poor that the Brake Buddy would not come on unless both feet
were used on the brakes. I contacted Tom Hampton of Grandview motors and
he fixed them. One of the rear brakes had come apart and pieces fell out
when the drum was removed (I guess I did something wrong when I last worked
on it). Tom reworked the brakes and they are the best they have been. Tom
was a life saver but the 120 miles I had to drive to get to his place kept
me on edge knowing I could hardly stop with what was only front brakes. I
realized it was the back brakes when I had the front wheels complaining on
one of the stops (both feet on the brakes) I had to make before I got to
Tom's place.

Now safely parked in Oswego NY for month of July. It is nice the weather
gets to the mid 80's with a nice breeze off the water and the sunsets
across lake Ontario are worth the short walk from the RV to watch.

By the way, this is the first trip I have not had to worry about over
heating while driving (It was over 100 out side for a while and 95
inside). I add an oil cooler and changed the jet and spring in the carb.
Yes! I got less gas mileage but I never found a hill I could not out run
most Big Trucks and still not over heat. I give up a little gas mileage
for the extra performance.

Art,

Actually your "disaster" with the brakes may have been a stroke of great good luck! Tom was a voice of reason who talked me off the ledge with an unseen coach (of dubious ownership) 2,000 miles from home. I trusted his honesty and skill and I believe I got a bargain from him for all the work he did.

Whatever the bill was, I'd wager it was money well spent. Dan can now take this opportunity to rightfully brag about his reaction arm brakes!

Now how about some pictures of your coach and toad? I'm greedy that way.

Art,
Glad to read all is well. It's good you got to Tom's place for your repair. He is a good man.
I also use a Brake Buddy in our toad. The problem with the Brake Buddy is if you lose the brakes on the coach there is nothing to tell the Brake Buddy to come on ( as you found out) The Brake Buddy has a plug connection for a break away switch. I use this to connect the break away switch but also added two more wires that I connected to a normaly open switch on the coach dash. This allows me to engage the toad brakes at any time.
Hope I never need this switch but it's there if I do.

Yep, two years in a row I rolled through El Paso with no rear brakes. I was tired of that. That is why I now can stop our GMC on a dime. Reaction arm.
Tom Hampton is a good and trustworthy man. I would never doubt anything he says. So glad you found him.
