Hi Everyone,
My husband and I have been lurking here for the past couple of months and figured it was time to get out of the shadows. My husband and I have two older children (already out of the house) and 2 year old triplets. We had done a lot of research about fulltime RV living with kids and decided we wanted to give it a go. Almost 3 months ago we stumbled upon a GMC motorhome while looking for one to buy.
We both loved the look and after reading a lot about them we were hooked. It was just the right size for us, easy to drive and to get around. We ended up trading the guy one of our cars for the GMC ($3500 value). We know that the owner before him must have loved it because he kept meticulous records, receipts, and every manual on it. The guy we got her from though had completely trashed her. It's a long story (and currently being detailed on our blog) but in short he lied about tons of stuff and the extent of her rebuild has been a lot more then we ever expected. The only thing he didn't lie about was the AC unit working but that broke last week too (in 105 degree weather no less) Smile
So after a couple months of having her, and just completing our first month of living in her, we still have a long way to go to get her where we want her (and where she needs to be). I have to say that there has been a great deal of information you guys have shared that has really helped and we appreciate it. There doesn't really seem to be anyone around us that knows much about this RV, fixing her, part replacement and so on, which has made it a little harder. We're learning though.
Even with all the problems we have had and ones we are still facing, we absolutely love our GMC and refuse to give up on her.
I look forward to talking to everyone and getting some good advice from people who know this rig well.

welcome aboard.
sounds like you bought a good foundation. and most likely would have done all the work your doing anyway...you just might not have done it so soon. the insulation in the ceiling is a fantastic idea and you will thank yourself for it. the PO of mine replaced the headliner but DID NOT insulate at all. she is always about 10 to 20 degrees hotter inside. my next project will be to fix that!

you might want to look on the GMC assist (aka the black list)
http://www.bdub.net/Black_List/

there might be someone near you that would be more then happy to drop by and help out or at least give you some pointers.

Good luck and when your done you will KNOW that it is right.

Once you replace everything that is attached to something else. It will all be fixed.

I just read your blog. This is going to be interesting. Where are you living, what part of Ky? I am 90 miles west of Paducah and have installed a new flush mounted propane stove top, in our GMC, this morning. I too write a blog about our travels and work on the GMC.
Welcome to our group. As you already know one can find anything about a GMC coach right here. Friendliest rvers I have ever run across.
Dan,
who is glad that his triplets belong to his brother's daughter. I play with them, then they go home, next street over. Very Happy

Just wave an open bag of M&M's out the window and Dan will find you.

Welcome! I agree you've taken on a big task, but if you can keep it to almost all DIY tasks, and shop "smart" (aka junk yards and 'net) for your parts, you should be able to renovate the classic RV back to its intended glory without breaking the bank. It'll be interesting to see how much power you can squeeze out of those solar cells (especially when running an electric fridge), but hopefully you'll be able to make it work.

And let's face it, these things become a labor of love more than a rational use of resources. Just be careful about going TOO far with the upgrades, as you can only put so much money into one before you start "gifting it" to the next owner.

Good luck!

Mom, Micheal et al,

Welcome to the group/family/cult/asylum

Even though there are non-members that read the forum, we still use names here so we are always sure who we are talking to...
You may have an identifying handle, but please have a real name in the sig file or profile. But, we never post open @ddresses or straight telephone numbers for the spambots to grab.

It is also good if you include your geographic location and the coach particulars in your sig. That way if someone knows what your issue is and is in striking range, they will know without asking. Don't expect anybody here to remember what your coach is.

If you have been lurking a while you might recognize that everybody has gotten to leave one part to me. I don't mind at all. It just is that shortly after we got out coach and I got wound into it, I realized as you probably will - if you have not already, that these coaches become much more a part of your life than just another thing you own. I, being a waterman, liken it to the relation that watermen have with their boats. So, I decided to greet new owners much as a waterman would greet a new owner or vessel. To this, I offer,

May the Good Lord Bless this coach and all those that set forth within her.

Welcome Mom, Micheal, Criton, Caitin and Haley.

Matt
