That is one nice place. Of course we had storms there last time on our departure day. Can't wait. Lots of geocaches there. Lots of history there. See you in the Spring, but hope to see everyone this Fall in Amana.

Great! Glad to know everyone's coming "Down Home" again! BUT, I can't
promise as good a rain as we had last time. :-)

We need to start thinking now about a pre/post rally over here at the farm.
The last one just about got washed out!

Just put it on the calendar and got some buy in from my wife. Can't wait. And Friday through Wednesday makes it real easy for working stiffs like me to make at least a couple days. Count on the full Knezek clan, although I'll have to find some ways for my wife to entertain the kids while I get to enjoy the seminars! Too bad there probably won't be a free country concert like last time. Most of the people that organized that went on trial for bribing public officials. Plus they lost the referendum on gambling...

So excited that GMCMI is coming back to our neck of the woods.

We'll even put you on a good fishing pond before or after.

Might one anticipate a beer drinkin' at the Henderson's?   If I can get the time off (2013 schedule isnt out yet) I'd be pleased to barbecue some Almost Famous Chicken for the mob assembled.

Yea Carl, I know it is a huge 1,700 mile trip for you. But you'll love the area, the Fl beaches near Panama city are also worth the trip themselves and great eating in N'Orleans on the way. Let Kathy fly one way to keep the time shorter?

added later ... Heck maybe you both should get cheap tickets way early and both fly!

I would love to make that trip too, but we are still wage slaves and can't get away from our jobs long enough to travel that far in the GMC just yet. Shawnee was a stretch for us. Any further East (or North for that matter ) is out of the question at this point. I know people do it, but flying to a GMC convention just doesn't make sense to me.

Carl,
I had heard that proposed site under consideration for the Spring 2013
was in the Tucson area, but the campground would not let vendors sell
their products and wares onsite at the rally. It is very hard doing
rallies and finding sites that will fit the organizations needs. In
the old days a fairground would do but today everyone wants full
service and that makes it harder to find sites that fulfill all needs

Carl,

I "heard" that GMCMI was planning on having the Convention in Tucson but for
some reason the idea was killed.

Johnny,

You're on. We'll just have to figure out whether to have a pre-, post-, or
both-rally.

You weren't around when we had the last GMCMI Dothan and post-rally at my
aunt's 250 acre play farm. There's plenty of space for dry camping, with 3
full 30A hookups and available power for several more 15A extension cords.
Most of the property is wooded, with about 50 acres recently clear cut.
For our last rally attempt, I mowed enough space for probably 100 coaches
so everyone would have plenty of choices.

There are two well-populated ponds, one with only catfish, the other with
bass and bream. The biggest problem there is that the fish hardly know
what a hook is -- I've been very laggard in my fishing for the 7 years
we've been here.

There's a 3 bedroom cabin with plenty of meeting space inside and on the
large open and screened porches. A "smokehouse" has BBQ grilles and other
facilities (plus another bedroom). Or for a more informal venue, there's a
40'x40' metal barn from which we can move the tractor and JD Gator. The
Gator and a "Drive from the Hood" hunting jeep can make sightseeing
exciting.

It would be rare for there to be a conflict with any other use or visitors,
so we can schedule 'most any time with confidence.

Roger Black still owes us a Catfish Cookin'; that, with your BBQ chicken,
should be enough to draw a big crowd!

I had heard that too, but I'm pretty sure the Pima County Fairgrounds has plenty of full hook-up spaces and I KNOW they have more than adequate facilities. Even if Lazy Days wouldn't allow vendors, there was always that alternative. Must be something else going on behind the scenes that we are not privy to.

I am very disappointed. I really enjoy the GMMI conventions and cannot make but a very few of them due to the location always being outside of my driving range due to our limited time frames. I guess we'll just have to wait until we are retired to enjoy those rallies.

I checked out the Pima County Fairgrounds a few years back and found that it would be very expensive for a GMCMI convention.

The buildings we would need were priced at about $1200 each per day and we might have needed two.

Including the setup and teardown days one building came to approx $18,000.

If we had 180 motorhomes the building alone would have been about $100 per motorhome. If we needed two buildings it would be $200 per motorhome. That doesn't include the camping fees, food and our other overhead.

It was way too expensive back then. I don't know id they have lower prices now but it could be checked again if Kim hasn't already done so. However, Dothan, AL has already been contracted for.

We (Kim and I) tried to have back-to-back rallies at Lazydays in Tucson (formerly Beaudry) but they apparently didn't want our business. I think they would have allowed our vendors (they own the Camping World on that site) but what they would not allow is any outside food (ice cream socials) or drinks (wine and margaritas - only water) and Kim finally gave up on them. I had a backup plan of having our rally in the Tubac area (Amado actually) just in case and that, it turns out, is what we had to do.

What are the membership requirements for attendance? I had planned to join FMCA and GMCEast OR DixieLanders once I get the motorhome on the road, but GMCMI wasn't a priority. Dothan is close enough, and the Peanut Festival attractive enough, that the Financial Manager might approve the funds for that convention.

GMCMI is worth the small cost, just for the parts list. Hard for the kid behind the counter argue that your part number is no good, when you have documentation.
After all, telling him that you need a part for a 1975 GMC Motorhome, will generally stop their computer dead. Then they may listen to you.
Been there and done that.

Sunshine Statesmen, Alumni, and Dixielanders have all had rallies at Lazy
Days near Tampa. They allow NO on-site sales, nor any imported food, etc.
But they do have free breakfasts and (meager) lunches for anyone who
wanders in. Any catering has to be done by their people.
