I picked up a couple of late style tail lights in like new condition at Pick and Pull on sale day. I was looking at Gene's site as to the modifications needed. I see Emery mounted the new lights complete. Some just the lens and some a section of the newer assembly? Does the complete newer unit give a better light then the mix of new and old? Does one fit better then the other? Is it just a mater of choice? Any suggestions before I start cutting things up?

I cut off part of the grey plastic housing to make them fit. Also, I painted the interior of the old housing white, in order to make them brighter. White reflects better than aluminum.

I mounted mine as-is--I wanted more than just the look. It required
enlarging the opening in the back of the tail-light well, which was
not actually difficult to do with a rotary cutter. I also installed
rivet-nuts for the four screws. But I was starting with a clean shell
rear cap from a junkyard, so it had nothing in those wells when I
acquired it. I had to drill and install those rivet nuts for the
mounting screws.

Pretty much there isn't anything you can do to make the old reflector match the "modern" reflector that is part of the new assembly.

BUT....

You have to cut the body for the lights to fit. It makes one more place to ensure you have sealed. (Can you say water leaks?)

I am beginning to think the best way would be to go to (white) LED's mounted on the original reflector and removing all of the gray plastic of the new tail lights. Most LEDS do not use the reflector.

OBTW: Rock Auto has brand new tail lights at not much more than Pick-n-pull prices. You do not get any sockets or wiring, but if you are cutting the lights anyway, you are not going to use them.

I installed just the face of the new fixture and it works for me. The screw holes lined up fairly good. I started them all and tightened together as the holes are just a shade off.
What Mike says is my next thought. I paid 80 bux for a set of leds for my vdub. I love them and they are bright. I believe I can buy another set and fashion them behind my more modern face and make them work. They flash 3 times, very fast, when I hit the brake then hold solid. I have a flashing brake light about 18 inches wide, led, mounted on my rear solar panel frame, above the rear glass. I want folks behind me to realize that I have the reaction arm braking system and I can stop on a dime.

Be sure and take (and post) pictures so I can copy you... or learn from YOUR mistakes! Twisted Evil

(I have a year or two before I need to decide how to do the lights on my keeper coach.)

Mike, you know I do nothing without pictures. No one would believe I did the job, but would give credit to Teri. No pictures, it did not get done by me. Very Happy

Pete Peak from Maryland sells a "just the lenses" kit. He is listed on eBay, and the price is $99. Ten minute conversion. Has an additional aluminum reflector to keep the light from leaking from red portion to back up light portion. I believe that this is the same kit that Bert and Faye have for sale.
Pete was able to get the manufacturer of the assembly for GM to sell him just the outside lenses.
They look better than my pick-a-part selections.
LED's are coming. Have 1 watt reds to install. (6 per side).

Interesting Tom. Can you email me some info on your "6 per side"? That is what I have in the vdub.

Could we simply affix an array of LED's on the inner surface of the lens and wire them to an 1157 socket? Most of them attached to the running lights and the remainder to the brakes/blinkers?

Larry,
When I had some LED's made for tail light assemblies, the light
outputs for both running light and brake/turn lights output is
governed by DOT requirements. Don't think you can just simply add a
bunch of lights and meet their requirements.

But,,, do you have enough good information to make an informed decision Roy?

Roger is correct about the approval on the lights.

Gene Dotson has cut a circle in his "modern" lense and inserted a HF type trailer light. He has it sealled real good to keep from leaking. I have seen others who have done similar things.

Cannot just replace filament builds with raw LEDs. Current will destroy LEDs faster than your eyes can registar their destruction. You must limit input current to the LED chain. Cheap method is resistor properly sized. Better, more expensive, a current regulator circuit. RS sells a kit for both 1 & 3 watt LEDs. Roll you own.
End up with a similar appearance to the LED lights used on new vehicles. Use red LEDs behind red lenses for brightest light output.
Hope this helps.
