With the twins arrival in December we haven't had much of a use for the GMC this year. Just too hard with two babies plus a 2.5 year old. So I did the worst thing imaginable and basically just let her sit. Yeah I did some stuff to prepare last fall, but I was still feeling guilty about it.

Got off of work early yesterday and spent much of the afternoon changing fluids and washing the old girl. Checked all my rubber and bolts, noticed I've got some mice that need killing, and decided that we needed to put her in the town Fourth of July parade this a.m.

Finally finished up and got her running, had to prime the carb and massage the Onan a bit, but she came up running nice and sweet. So we did some mild decoration this morning, loaded up 3 kids, and the wife, and we went down to the parade.

A 1 hour slow procession through our very hilly town, the GMC ran great the whole time, and the Onan ran the AC load nicely. I guess she has mostly forgiven me for ignoring her for about a year.

Pretty pleased overall considering I've never let her sit like that since I got her. Need to put new drums on the rear and probably pads on the front brakes, but otherwise I have no complaints. Maybe get out for another drive in a couple weeks, then we're hoping for our first family camping trip in September to a W&L vs Sewanee football game.

If everything checks out, it'll be a week long trip down to FL to visit with the in-laws over Thanksgiving and then next year we'll be back to a full camping schedule.

Can't wait. I bought this GMC with an eye toward having our kids enjoy it as they grew up. Finally feel like next year we'll start that process for real.

Enjoy the Fourth, happy Independence Day America, and enjoy those GMCs...

Jeremy,

That's exactly what these were made for. You put a smile on my face thinking about your happy family being part of the town's celebration. Now all I want are pictures! (because I'm needy that way :-))

Over the past 2 years we have entered both our 77 Coaches in the White Rock
Torchlite Parade - an evening parade.
We wrap the coach in rope lights. We get so many thumbs up. This year we
are Hosting the Cascaders White Rock Rally and possibly will have 4 to 5
coaches entered.

A couple weekends ago We entered our coach in the Peach City Cruise In -
approx 800 cars - ours the only GMC Coach.
Had many view it. Lots of thumbs up.

77 Eleganza - right now being used by our daughter and 6 children camping

Wonderful to hear of families enjoying GMCs--especially the younger ones.
Bob and I love the Pacific City area and the entire Oregon coast. Nice and
cool there now... Sandra

Jeremy,

You're guilt feelings are baseless. Even though you weren't able to use the
GMC I'm sure "she" knows you still care! ;-) Plus the fact you gave her a
good going over before you took and showed her off in the parade. I'm sure
she appreciated that! Come to think of it if you gave "her" a name it would
really make her day!

Look at my situation, Double Trouble gets "ignored" for 8 months a year
except whenever JohnS looks in on her now and then and so far she hasn't us
down, in spite of her name! ;-)

Couple of suggestions regarding the brakes; consider installing a set of
disks on the middle axles it will improve braking performance a great deal.

I really like the Performance Friction carbon metallic brake pads on Double
Trouble's front and middle disks, I liked them so much when I installed new
drums on the rear I used carbon metallic shoes as well.

Rob M.

Rob -- "she" does have a name. Way back when we first got her, I was working on something with my father-in-law. In between a few too many beers we started talking about the personality of our vehicles. All I can say is something about the GMC struck me as old-manish, and so "she" was named Harvey RV, being a name that we don't see too much on youngsters these days as well as a decent bit of mildly inebriated rhyming. I'm sure it was funnier at the time. For some reason, the name has stuck. So despite calling her "she", she has a man's name.

As for the brakes, my original intention was to do the whole system. Booster, proportioning valve, new lines, P-30 MC, while also doing the 1 ton front end conversion. Then taking the big brakes from the front and putting them on the middle axle and the two best available drums on the rears, or if none were acceptable, just getting some used drums for the rear.

Sadly work has been slow, and with the twins expenses have been up, so I'm just not sure I'm going to go the whole nine yards in one stage. So it might just be decent used drums on the back and pads on the front for another few years...

Chuck -- thanks for the offer but we aren't going to make Crossville. This will be the first year we've owned the coach where we haven't made at least 1 rally of the various clubs we've belonged to. Kind of sad, but given the circumstances with the twins, there just isn't much we can do about it.

Rob -- I got your email. Thanks. When I'm ready to go forward I'll shoot you something back. At the moment I'm tied up with building a massive retaining wall in the back yard so we have someplace to put a jungle gym / swingset for the kids.

I get hosed regularly - BeanStation hits my BWD Nationals.  Crossville hits "All new computers and new software for three different radio stations in one weekend".  Sigh.
