Rob,
I'm not sure -- most of the items are designed in the US. I am not sure what country gains most from the shipping. The stores and employees all earn US dollars, the paper and printers of the sales brochures are US. Some of the Chinese boxes are made from US paper. The company is financed by US banks, I think.
Confusing enough to be a non issue as far as I am concerned.

Speaking of tools (and Harbor Freight in particular, as the nearest one is only a few miles away for me), is there a "suggested GMC motorhome toolbox list"? The rig I bought has a few of the GMC-specific things (like an air bag replacement strut, the big jack and wheel lug wrench, etc.), but doesn't have any "hand tools". What do y'all carry when you're on the road?

I'm sure I go way overboard, but I carry, among other things, A Harbor Freight 3/4" drive socket set, a 1/2" drive Craftsman socket set, a 1/4" & 3/8" drive Craftsman socket set, a set of cheap combination wrenches, assorted pliers, screw drivers, a wire cutter/crimper (along with terminals, and an assortment of wire), a "Q-Max" 12 volt compressor, two coiled air lines, a blow gun, a tire chuck, a tire gauge, an infrared thermometer, two bottle jacks (one is a Torrin two stage), a jack hook, several flashlights, a hammer, an 18v drill (cheap B&D that I got from Woot.com) a multimeter, a "Kill=A-Watt" meter, a pair of wheel chocks, a homemade air bag replacement strut, along with an assortment of fluids, filters, belts, air fittings, pieces of hose, hose couplings, hose clamps, assorted ignition parts, ....I'm sure I'm forgetting a few things, but you get the picture.
Do I recommend carrying ALL this stuff? Not really, but I like to be prepared. I have used many of these items to make minor repairs on the road. It makes me feel better to KNOW I have the stuff to fix most problems if I need to.

I should have added to my last post that the most important tool you have at your disposal is to take care of maintenance and repair issues before you leave your driveway. You can't be absolutely sure nothing bad will happen, but you can be pretty confident if you are prepared. I have had two breakdowns (in four years and 18,000 miles) that have left me on the side of the road, both ignition related, that I was able to repair because I had the tools and parts to fix things.

When I get through with a repair or install, I clean the tools used and toss them in the pax seat pedistal. If I rummagfe thriough there and don't find what I need for a fix, I et it, and when the fix is done I toss it under the seat too. It's an eclectic mix of stuff which seems to fit nearly everything. Stuff I don't take along include:
A/C guages
Vacuum pump
Engine stand
Stinger lift
And I'm beginning to wonder about the first two...

Make sure that you have a combination of tools that can remove the air bag. And, that air bag spare. Bottle jacks (2) and jack hook. I carry a B&D 18v Impact tool, gets the tough ones off. 1/2 drive impact sockets to go with above.

All, thanks for the great info / advice on my "road kit". I've clipped a thick pile of coupons from my Harbor Freight catalog, and will rummage around in my garage for the other bits and pieces I might need (hose clamps, terminals, fuses, etc.). I guess this means my nearly empty tool compartment won't be that way for long.

I didn't see a torque wrench (needed mine to change a cylinder head) or a timing light (needed one when I swapped out a distributor) Harbor Freight isn't always close by when you are in the middle of the desert.

Rob,
Even the skill level is often called into question -- when the item is produced by computer controlled equipment --
It is a discussion sometimes brought up on another forum I frequent -- "If the equipment making the part is in S Korea or England is there really a difference in the quality?"
Then -- who makes the computer controlled equipment? and on and on...
As for made in USA -- quite a few companies/industries are or will soon see a return of the manufacturing for the same reason they went off shore -- the cost. Labor rates have risen in other parts of the world.
Did you know that one maker of chop sticks sold in China is in Americus, Georgia?

Robert Mueller wrote on Wed, 04 July 2012 08:42 | Dennis,
Agreed!
Another point IMHO is that what you've noted below doesn't take the skill
level it takes to MAKE the tools.

Dang, Rob! Now you have me wondering about
how I can put a similar kit in Money Pit!
First things first, though.
1) Establish a WORKING fresh water system.
2) Find where to hook the negative output of
the charger/converter for house battery.
3) Fix the leaks in the suspension air system
and install the new compressor I bought from
Jim K at Shawnee.
4) Get automotive A/C system working.

Rob, I don't think that is overboard. Barely adequate is how I might see
it, but I am a mechanic and "You just can't have too many tools!" It is the
same with money and horsepower, there is no such thing as too much of
either. <Grin>
