I'm selling my 1976 Eleganza. I drove it up to Ely, Nevada from Las
Vegas on May 17. I went out and started it once a week for three weeks.
Here it has been about 10 days, and now it won't start. It's got gas. I
give up. I'm not a mechanic, and don't want to become one at this point
in my life.

Here's a list of things about it:

>Both Roof AC units work
>Dash AC works
>Generator works - even starts from inside the coach. There must be a
loose connection on the panel. Sometimes it won't shut off from inside.
>Air Compressor works DETAILS BELOW
>Brand new stove
>Brand new fridge
>Brand new microwave
The three items above have never been used, or they have been used so
slightly as to look unused

> 6 Alcoa wheels, and that cool aluminum step at the door - I forget
the name of it.
>Driver's windshield needs replacing. Passenger side has a few little
dings that can be repaired before they turn into cracks
>There is a leak in the plumbing right behind the air compressor
compartment wall. I have the compressor disassembled and removed so I
can get behind that wall to repair the leak. I plan on doing that one of
these mornings when it's cool enough to work inside the coach.
>The dash is shot - the part behind the panel. Right now I have the
panel off because the speedo was not working. It was simply unhooked. I
suspect that was in an attempt to keep the mileage from raising. It
reads around 79k.
>The windshield wiper switch didn't work until I took it out and lubed
it. It seems to work now, but I have not re-assembled the dash. My
history with luck dictates that when I get the dash all re-assembled
with the switch in there, it will quit again.
>The rear section is one big mattress. It's a brand new mattress still
in the bag. Right now I have that all disassembled so I can get to the
water system. The fresh water tank is full. I need to empty it, but the
drain valve is rusted shut.
>Most of the interior lighting works. Not sure if I missed anything
here when I checked it out.
>It has headers. I had them wrapped with heat shield. I know some
people don't like doing this. It's dry here, so there's no moisture to
get trapped between the headers and wrap.
>There is a list of stuff I had done to get it running when I first got
it. 2200 dollars worth of engine work to include that header wrap, new
ignition module, a freeze plug or two, some other items I can't remember
off hand.
>The air bags are not hooked up to the system, but rather are filled
manually. They work, and there is an extra one in the coach under one of
the seats.
>There is a vacuum cleaning system under one of the seats also. Not
sure where it goes.
>It doesn't leak oil.
>I believe all the gauges work.
>All exterior lighting works - turn signals, brake lights, etc.
>Could use a new steering wheel, or a nice cover for the existing one.
>There is no body damage. The long strip of trim is missing from the
driver's side, but it is under one of the seats and just needs to be
re-attached.

If there's anything else I can think of, I'll post. I have some pictures
I'll post over on the GMC photo site when I get a chance. I'll be happy
to take any photos of whatever anyone interested wants to see.

I just wanted to let the list users know there's one for sale, and I'm
not trying to get rich off it. I will take whatever is a fair price that
I will determine with whomever is interested. I got this as a gift from
my mother-in-law who paid 10k for it.

GMCs are known for boiling the gas out of the carb especially if the crossovers in the intake manifold are not blocked. It may be as simple as no gas in the carb.

Open the engine hatch cover. Take the top off of the air cleaner by removing the one wing nut. If it is not already open, PUSH open the butterfly with your finger, or a screwdriver, and dump about 1/4 cup of gasoline down the two throats of the carb.

THE FOLLOWING IS IMPORTANT. Re-install the air cleaner cover so if the engine back fires you do not have an open fire. Have a fire extinguisher handy just in case. In over 50 years I have never need one.

Move any remaining gas to a location OUTSIDE of the coach.

Close the hatch cover and crank the engine. See if it fires or starts. If it does start then you know you have a gas delivery problem.

You can repeat the above procedure several times if necessary.

If it does not fire or start we can assume it is an electrical problem (spark to the plugs).

I'll bet it is a gas deliver problem that can be corrected by adding an electric fuel pump.

It also could be a dirty gas filter which is simple to change.

That's fair. But you don't have to be MUCH of a mechanic to get one of these 70's technology engines working. It only needs 4 things:
1. Air/fuel mixture getting to the cylinder.
2. Compression
3. Spark
4. The above 3 have to get there at the right times.
2 and 4 RARELY spontaneously and suddenly fail. If they do, you probably need a mechanic (at least a shop equipped with stuff to do major engine work). Checking 1 and 3 are easy. And fixing them are not complicated either. But if you don't have time or a climate controlled area to work on it, and you can't wait for favorable weather, even those simple fixes can be very aggravating. We are here and ready to help if you decide to take a stab at fixing it. No matter what, we all here hope it works out for you.

While everything listed in previous postings is possible. Lets do not scare the guy. It ran 10 days ago when he shut it off so more than likely it is just not getting fuel to or through the carb.

Keep in mind that Ely, NV is over 6000 feet (I think it is around 6400 - 6500) and the temps have probably been in the high 80's. So he might just have a fuel vaporization issue.

Let him prime it and see if it starts.

I doubt there's a person on this board who hasn;t been discouraged once or twice. Chill for a bit before you hit it again.

I may have mis-read your post but (sounds like) you're not stranded in the jungle.

You should - as a practical consideration - effect the, likely minor, repair; 'kinda hard to sell a coach that doesn't run (and you just might learn to love the old girl).

If someone had offered me $50 last Wednesday when I was in the Whole Foods parking lot trying to get my generator to run after it quit an it was 111F out and I was working with oven mitts because the tools got so hot just being in contact with the generator, they would have gotten themselves a pretty good deal.

BUT, I did get it to run and we did go camping and I did have another minor electrical issue, but the kids got to see a herd of elk feeding at 5am, and my son and I did get to eat ice cream out on the lake while catching no fish, and we had a good time that we might not otherwise without the GMC.

So walk away for a time, come back with a few new strategies to try, and give it a couple more chances before you dump it.

I feel your pain man
I also understand how you might feel like giving up. However: you probably chose the GMC for being a classic beauty. We all know that it will need repairs because of it's age, and sometimes it will let us down at a most inconvenient time.

But any machine will do the same thing. (old and new). Non start issues are seldom serious and the most common. This might be the last straw for you in a series of repairs. But a SOB will have issues as well. I've seen and repaired many, many, many brand new vehicles, newer vehicles, and even many Toyotas that break down, won't start, need major repairs, and leave drivers stranded. Towing companies make a good living on this fact. (dealerships, repair shops, and parts shops too). Used car lots make a killing )

But very few machines have a social, owner driven support network that you will find with this group. Which probably is the greatest value of GMC ownership. The public interest is also something that makes some of the frustration worth it.

From your list of haves, I would say that your well on your way to a dependable unit. Some sober second thought may encourage you to hang in there.

That being said though: sometimes we just need a reason to move on. I've bought a lot of vehicles in the past that had very little wrong with them because a minor thing put the owner over the edge. ( the $50 dollar syndrome) Usually, they buy something brand new.

All the best in whatever you finally decide!!

Best regards

John,

Thanks for your encouragement! One thing is, I never wanted this vehicle
in the first place! I was more or less TOLD to take it off her hands and
that was the end of it. Of course looking back, and now seeing what we
are up against, my wife is of the same mindset I was in when first
approached with this - BIG MISTAKE! We are not RV people. I do not want
to travel the country towing a little car. I want to stay home, raise
some horses and play guitar! The only reason I have this thing is
because my wife more or less TOLD me that we are taking it off mother's
hands. After all, it was "free" right? I tried to get enthused about it.
That ain't happening! I appreciate that there is a group of very
enthusiastic owners here, and that is fantastic. I'm just not one of them!

One shot of the starting fluid and it fired right up. It's purring
happily right now. I forgot to add in the list of stuff - it has a new
awning as well. I don't know how to deploy it though.

Make offer - Come and drive it away. :-)

While under way, there was no problem, but the route to the mountains required a couple of stop lights and there was the real problem. Chug, chug, and pretended to quit a time or two, then cleared out and kept on going. I made sure I had full tanks for help absorb some of the heat radiated off the roads and even switched tanks to the fuller one (if there really was a difference, it was probably all in my head).

Sell it. You are not a mechanic and neither am I. Unless you are rich, you'll watch it rot in the driveway. No matter what you hear, these are complicated beasts, not unlike the space shuttle.

If not for Ken Henderson and his unfailing generosity, mine would be up on blocks.

Sell it and sleep better at night.

Dave,
You do not need to be a mechanic, but a person that is willing to ask
questions and make reservations.
I know I have one heck of a time with my computer and hate it, but I am
slowly learning some of the things to make it work now.
You can do the same with your coach.
I will be that person you can call and ask.
We have loads of owners that do not know much about engines, just able to
tell us what is or not doing.
There will be times I will tell you to shut up and listen to me as I have
experience and background on few hundred of these units. Plus we run a shop
with couple mechanics that will get on the phone to help guide you.
You are not required to purchase anything from us.
