The trick here is to sit back and look at the situation. Grab a hydraulic jack, or two, and get busy. I am guessing maximum time I spent on each mount was 10 minutes. Remember, I don't work without shade. When it moved, I was done. The back two are simple. Nothing to do but undo the nuts and swap those out. The jack will help. Don't bend anything on the bottom of Onan with jack. Use a 2x4. On the front two, pull the faceplate and the metal plate that the right mount is bolted to. Swap them out, put the plates back on and you are done my friend. No sense in postponing this chore as it is really no chore at all. Gives you a chance to clean things up a bit also.
Tools: two jacks, 2x4, 3/8 and 7/16 sockets, 9/16 wrench, plyers, and a big ole screwdriver.
I ain't even a mechanic. Just look things over real good before you do anything. I did ask a few questions of Carl Stoeffer as I knew he had done this recently.
When I do the intake I will have lots of pictures of just what is going on. I have received lots of advise on making the aluminum intake stick from Dick Paterson and Rob Mueller. The Onan was too simple for pictures.

Dan,
My experience is very similar to yours. I did have to scratch my head and think for a while when swapping the front mounts. Then I just started removing things and they came out. I put it back together before I forgot where everything came from. For me it was less than 2 hours, but then I spent much too much time scratching my head and thinking, and too little time wrenching. I should have used a bottle jack, but used my floor jack instead. Oh, and for me the only place to work on this was in the gutter in front of my house!
It's easy, easy, easy, but it cost me another weekend and a couple hundred bucks because "while I'm in there I might as well do..." so started my starter motor bracket, starter motor and new flywheel chore.

The question is....was it worth the effort? You expressed some doubt about the need to replace them when we were emailing back and fourth. Did it make it quieter? Less vibration and noise inside the coach? Did the new mounts raise it up enough to clear the bottom of the enclosure? Are you glad you spent the 50 bucks and a couple of hours time?

Does replacing the Onan motor mounts fix a 'hard to slide out' problem with the Onan? As soon as I get my coach back - another story - I need to figure that out. The last time I used the Onan it was well over 100 degrees and I had to run it while in the walmart parking lot for several hours. It started running a little rough but I could not get it to slide out so I could look at it and it was too hot - weather wise - to mess around too much.

I doubt I will feel any improvement. My mounts did not look bad. Only the lower left front one was squeezed. I think they may have been replaced before I got the coach. Someone had the mounts, extra, so I bought them. I am saving the old ones to compare to any others, that folks may have removed. We have not tried it since I finished about noon, as the shade was quickly leaving the spot where I have it parked. Can not say it helps anything, I am just here to let folks know that anyone can do this if they sit back and look the thing over real good first.
Armand, you may need to grease the slides. Unless, your mounts are so bad, that they let the Onan drag. I did not have that problem. You need to update me Armand. Email me when you have time.

Armand,
As Dan said, clean and lubricate the slides. I used spray white lithium grease. Maybe not the best choice as it will probably attract dirt and dust. As Dan also said, unless your mounts are so squished that the generator is dragging on the bottom of the 'drawer' housing. new ones are unlikely to fix your problem.

Place a finger in the hole in the center of the flywheel cover. You should feel the bolt head that holds the flywheel on to the Onan. If it is not directly there (or, pretty close) your motor mounts have failed. If you drag the starter when you slide the Onan in and out, you probably have a broken starter motor bracket.
Be there, done that.

Carl,
That's a fair question. I had been battling an intermittent starter and did not know if the problem was the starter's clutch, a broken bracket, or if it had all be caused by squished motor mounts. As the motor mounts were a simple task, I did that first, with the intention of pulling the starter.
I have since replaced the starter, starter bracket (which I believe to be the crux of my problem), and my flywheel. With all of this changed I am thrilled that my Onan starts on every try, however I feel as if it is running a bit rougher than it did before all of this effort. My only explanation for this is that the new flywheel is balanced somewhat differently than the old one and I've probably bumped and jiggled a few things. Then again, it could be that my expectation was too high and I'm being overly critical now.
The Onan starter motor mount that I took out looked perfect however when I mounted the new starter the gears did not mesh! I expect that the old mount was bent, for when I put in the RAGUSA mount everything lined up perfectly.
After I install the Pertronix ignition I'll report back about how sweet she runs.

For me, it was (worth it). Even though the mounts had only settled about 1/4", the center bolt did raise up in the front cover hole, and the new mounts were more resilient than the old ones, which were kind of hard. It may have been all in my head, but I DID notice less vibration and noise from the Onan after replacing the mounts. For about $55.00 worth of parts and a few hours labor, I'm glad I did it even if it is just for a little peace of mind.
I have chased some oil leaks also, and hope I've got most of them. I am still not sure why it quit on me, after about an hour of driving, with the roof AC on, on our last little trip. The only change I made before this started happening was to change to straight 30 weight oil, from 20w50. It could be the oil is getting too thin and it trips the LOP switch, or something entirely different, like the fuel pump or the coil overheating. The last time I drove it, to check out the intake manifold installation on the 455, it ran fine from start to finish, but it was only about a 40 - 45 minute drive. When I got home, there was a small amount of, what appeared to be oil smoke, coming from the exhaust pipe. My number one suspicion is still the oil, though I might change the 37 year old fuel pump anyway.

Tom,
Reference: Parts Book 78Z page 28-66 figure 28.045A Key 2-DOOR-slide out / Key 51-COVER-blower housing scroll / 52-SCROLL-blower
housing
This confused me a bit because the COVER-blower housing scroll mounts to the SCROLL-blower housing which in turn mounts to the
engine block.
I then looked at this photo:
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/for-sale-or-trade/p31153-onan-6kw-for-sale.html
And figger'd out that the hole in the middle of the DOOR needs to line up with the hole in the COVER. The DOOR is mounted to the
SLIDE.
Great way to check the mounts!
Regards,
Rob M.

Jeff at Alex serum gmc stocks the mounts for the Onan. Less than $50 for the whole deal iirc.
