Anybody got any advice on how to ship a used gas tank? My Catalina
needs a new tank and there's just no love for us full size Pontiac
guys when it comes to parts. :(
Tripower Lenny has a couple of leftover tanks from his own project,
one of which he'll sell me pretty reasonable but the problem is going
to be shipping. Anybody got any advice on how to get a used gas tank
from somewhere Up North to down here in Jackson MS?
Crossposted to my RV mailing list since those guys prolly know a thing
or two about shipping gas tanks as well.
Lenny, where do you live again? Maybe if I'm lucky some GMCer will
pass your way on the way to a Rally and I might be able to coordinate
it that way? Or if anyone is going way out of their way to Pontiac
Southern Nationals or something else within driving distance I could
rendezvous with them if they're willing to haul cargo?
Otherwise, we gotta figure out a way to get UPS,FEDEX, DHL, USPS, or
somebody to take this thing. :(

You might check Greyhound Bus. They will ship from terminal but won't pick up or deliver.
Last time I checked on them though they were higher cost than FedEx Ground for some wheels.
FedEx ground will take larger items than UPS and are usually lower in price.

In my previous life I shipped hazmat for eons. Tanks containing residue of fuel are regulated until they are cleaned and purged.
Our instructor would refer to gas drums as "bomb NOS".

Where's he located, Counselor? I'll be in Salem VA the first week of August, I can haul it as far as Atlanta. You ship it by wrapping it on a pallet with shrinkwrap, and insuring for full value so the truckers will throw it around underhand and maybe not bust it. In a GMC you just set it on the floor and bungee it to something that doesn't slide around, or bungee to the roof rails.

It's in Cleveland OH, and I'm in Jackson MS. If we can get it from
Cleveland to St Charles IL on the weekend of July 17, I can get a
buddy to bring it as far as Little Rock. Otherwise, we'll have to find
a something else.
"Uship" was suggested but after looking into them, it looks kind of
scammy and illegal. That website makes it too easy for uninsured and
unlicensed wannabe truckers to haul loads around... I don't want any
part of that.

Robin,
I used Uship to move my spare Avion from Baltimore to its current resting place - No problem.
I used Uship to move my Caddy 500 & associated parts, a cabinet from my spare Avion, a sink from my spare Avion, and a Barbie GMC
from Houston, TX to Long Beach CA where it was put into a container by a guy here in Sydney that brings auto parts into Australia.
No problems
Regards,
Rob M.
