When I turn my ignition key the starter motor always goes;"er ...er... herrum" and the engine starts. Is this a sign of a starter motor problem? Just curious.

That is one way to describe it! If it is a mite hesitant but wasn't before maybe you are due for a new heavy duty battery.

Could be battery, battery connetions, solenoid or tired starter motor. Hard to tell from that without hearing it.

Bill,

I am with the others. Go over all the power connections, cleaning and tightening every one. There is a good chance that the hesitation will go away when you do. I've seen this before.

If that doesn't fix it, have someone put a meter on the battery directly while you crank it. It may be that the battery is getting weak and needs to be heated up. If that is the case, then you can buy a battery, but only after you are sure.

It could also be ignition timing but Do the electrical stuff first.

If you do the wiring mod listed on Gene's site, be very careful to bend the cable ends and make them line up squarely on the stud (bolt) perfectly on the solenoid BEFORE tightening the nut. That bolt is copper and soft. I know of one person who broke it off trying to do that mod. If you do break if off, replace he entire solenoid rather than just the bolt. The back side of that bolt wears over time. There is a spring loaded round copper washer that touches it and the other bolt on the bottom during starting. It needs to hit the two contacts squarely. If one is worn and the other is not, then that will not happen.
