Just because your factory temperature gauge continues to move a little, as you drive your coach, does not mean it is going to tell you when the engine gets too hot. You have no idea what the real temp is and your transmission may be boiling with you not realizing it. I see too many people on here with problems that have no clue what is going on. These machines are 40 years old. Get real. Monitor that engine and transmission with some kind of gauge. A very minimum, in my book, is the Digipanel. It is cheap insurance. Its very easy to install. I am a gauge nut but I still have a Digipanel with the alarms just in case I fail to see a gauge go "nuts". If you see any transmission fluid on the bottom of your coach, check it every 500 miles while it is at operating temperature and in park. Do that until you get the leak fixed. Guys are losing transmissions for no good reason.
If your thermostat sticks closed a gauge or Digipanel will tell you that NOW.
Ok, back to tinkering on the GMC. So hot outside I had to come in for a glass of water. With the humidity one would think I could hydrate myself by just normal breathing. Very Happy

How many people have a transmission temp gauge?

And what is normal operating temp for a GMC at highway speed, not heavily loaded or towing?

A trans pemp gauge is a no brainer. It pretty much has to get hot before it fails, knowing when it gets hot could make the difference between letting it cool down or having a pan full of shrapnel

But what do i know, i have a Revcon.

My beloved PO installed one along with the RAGUSA transmission pan. In normal driving I think it’s at about 125 degrees.

Glad you are still hanging around Dave. We may convert you yet. I have 2 trans gauges. The torque converter one can scare you while climbing a long Rocky Mtn grade on a 100 degree day. I find the torque converter fluid temp and the engine temp normally run about the same temps, just cruising down the road. My main gauge to watch is the vacuum gauge. Seems to just pull my eyes right to it. It will let you know when one is on a slight grade. Then I know to look at the trans temps if it is a hot day.
Everyone has a favorite gauge or no gauges. I am just saying that in a 40 year old coach we need something more than a factory engine temperature gauge that may or may not work properly.

I'm just for warning lights. If they had sensors that were
calibrated to various temperatures that would activate a light, then I
could pick them for the various things that need to be monitored
temperature wise. Then I could have all of the lights (different
colors) just above my eyeline as I'm looking out the windshield. I
can't scan and/or read 23 gauges on the dashboard (especially when
they are down by my knees). Plus, I really don't care what the
transmission temperature is. Manny won't let me have one of his
transmissions until mine breaks.

Gary, I had to laugh. Manny did me the same way. He would not sell me a transmission til we found the shafts worn where the chain mounts on the gears. I started working on him in the Spring of 2007. Almost 3 years later he let me have one, after you and he brought me that engine.
Now I am working on a grille.
I do like advanced warning that a problem may be going to occur. Gauges are not for everyone but the Digipanel will help lots of folks in various vehicles.

About 2 years ago, before the aluminum radiator and air deflectors, I had only the factory temp pickup and gauge. It never showed any problems and barely moved and was always below the half-way mark. I converted to a mechanical gauge that I calibrated and it showed that my coolant got as hot as 240 degrees when crossing the desert. As Dan said, get a real gauge and keep an eye on it. Now if I had only done that with my tranny I could have saved a lot of trouble and money.

Dave,

I have installed quality gauges, and wouldn't leave home without them. I don't need to over gauge, but have a vacuum, trans temp., oil pressure, water temp. and volt gauges. Pay attention to the engine and trans sounds plus the coach itself and you will stay out of a lot of major problems. When the light on the dash come on it is tooooo late.

Dave,

When I bought Double Trouble it had a Digi Panel in it already.

I was at Harbor Freight and spotted their cheap ($20) gages and bought a
full compliment.

Tach
Engine Vacuum
Oil Pressure
Oil Temperature x 2 (one for the engine one for the transmission
Water Temp
Volts

I find that the oil pressure, transmission temp, and water temp in the Digi
Panel and the HF gage run in close parallel.

All readings at speed:

Oil pressure runs @ 40-50 psi
Water temp runs at 180°F (thermostat) or below on cold days (aluminum
radiator)
Trans temp runs at 165° - 175° - external cooler in addition to aluminum
radiator
Engine vacuum - 20 or so at idle and depends how far my foot is in the carb
Volts - 13 - 14

Engine oil temp not hooked up yet - on my TTD list. Speaking of which where
should I put the sensor:

A) in the line that leaves the engine going to the radiator oil cooler?
B) in the line that returns to the engine from the radiator oil cooler?

Regards,
Rob M.

You want to know the temp of the oil in the pan. So therefore "A" as that point has the oil that has just been pumped from the pan.

Steve,

Thanks.

Now that I think of it B) is useless as it would mask hi oil temp problems!

Really? I thought the conventional wisdom was to monitor the temp going in to the trans becasue that tells you if the cooling is effective?

Dave, they are talking engine oil. On the trans I like watching both. I find 50 degrees difference in the trans pan to the torque converter. I unhooked my external trans cooler for a while and just ran the one in alum radiator. Noticed 10-15 degrees warmer fluid coming back into the pan of trans. Hooked it back up. After blowing 2 engines I have the oil cooler in the alum radiator bypassed and am only using an external one that Jim K. sent me. I would like to clean the radiator cooler and use it too, but I am scared of it right now. I have often thought about monitoring the oil temp in the engine but have not done so yet.
The digipanel is a simple install and you have options on what temps you want to monitor. It has a switch so you can monitor an extra temperature if you so choose. That may be what I use to monitor the engine oil with. The panel has a voltage measuring funtion that I wish was used for something different but it is what it is. Will alarm if your alternator goes out.

Clean the rad as best you can. Install an inline transmission filter on the return line to the trans. The return line to the trans dumps into the trans lube system so you do want clean oil there and an inline filter will do that.

Unlike the engine oil cooler where the outlet from the cooler goes to the oil filer and then to passages in the engine. With the engine oil cooler getting it clean is critical as the oil can bypass the filter if the filter is clogged or when the oil is cold.

Steve, the engine oil cooler is what we have bypassed. The mechanic cleaned it with something. He was going to use it in series with the new external one that Jim supplied. I said, "you are warrantying this engine, are you sure you don't want to bypass it?". He bypassed it. I want it in use but am scared after the problems I have had. I also took out my Mazda cooler and substituted the new one from Jim. Got two Mazda coolers that need good cleanings before I use them again.

There is a parallel conversation taking place on another forum. One of the members has called and gotten an offer for a group purchase:

"I called Digl-Panel (599-665-1546) and asked about a discount for our group (Wanderlodge Owner's Group). They will discount $40 per unit on orders of 5 or more."

They are talking about a unit for various diesel engines, but it might be worth a call if there is sufficient interest.

I just put the information out there. If someone is interested in working on a group purchase give them a call and see what can be worked out.

Obviously, I don't need one.

I'm going to edit a bit here. I think what the other guys are doing is stirring interest, and possibly keeping a list, but they've spoken with the owner of the company to secure the discount. Purchases will be made directly to the company.

By the way, I have a feeling the diesel version might be more expensive to start with. There is a good possibility that the discount on a model to fit the GMC might not be as great.

I just don't know.

Group purchase is probably something we should always consider, especially for things like this. Our vendors are good about offering specials but these group purchases can also be good. Usually, there is work to be done and some paperwork involved, but it could be worth it.
