I WISH I got 8 to 10 mpg. My only trip (250 miles largely up hill) in
the '76 Eleganza (with headers) was at 5 mpg. Not towing a TOAD. Just me
and a 12 oz. bottle of spring water and a Springfield 1911A1.

Is the Springfield to shoot the engine block?

The last time my mileage dropped to 5.5 mpg I found that I wasn't getting spark on two cylinders. The 8 year old spark plug wires had failed. After putting in a new set of plug wires from Dick Paterson my mileage immediately went back to 8+.

Also check your distributor cap and rotor. Probably best to just put on new ones if they are quite old.

Your module in the distributor might also be suspect.

Let us know if that improves things.

When I got my GMC in 2002 it would get a solid 5.5-6mpg. The amount of
bungled stuff on that motor would astound you.
Patterson HEI ignition (and advancing the timing once I found the marks)
and a decent facsimile of a GMC-specific Quadrajet fixed most of that.

5mpg is pretty low. I have gotten as low as 7 with the current setup
doing slow back-road trips. Another story about following someone who
was determined to get lost.

Don't you get to go DOWN those hills, too? That gets your mileage back
to a reasonable level Hard to figure mileage over only 250 of them...

Others will give you a list of things to check with the engine other drive train stuff.

I would like to add the running gear. Brakes, bearings and tires. Check them for heat and abnormal wear. If it is scrubbing the tires it is taking more power to roll down the road. If the brakes are dragging (and heating up) you are using more gas.

Have you been using the generator much... if can effect the fuel in the tank by a surprising amount.

But keep in mind you are using a VERY small sample. It might be just an issue of not getting the tanks burped on the first fill-up (leaving less fuel in the tank) and getting a good burp (and more fuel into the tank) on the second fill.

I don't feel a MPG calculation is of any value unless it is calculated over at least 5 fills. A single fill MPG calculation is, IMO, generally useless. I have kept a spread sheet, for each vehicle, of my mileage and gas usage for many years. The fill to fill MPG can vary quite a bit even though the vehicle use is identical over the fill usage (commuting, same miles, traffic and weather). The 5 fill MPG calcs are very consistent and match well with the MPG since the very first fill. It will be interesting to see how this works with the GMC when (if?) I ever get it on the road.

Story time!!!

On out first trip out, my wife took up driving at the bottom of Lake Michigan and I was navigating. We went north, up through the Chicago suburbs at rush hour and she just drove with the traffic. All I could think of was when she had my Opal GT running 98~100 on the New York Thruway (we didn't get caught). I kept saying "Mary, do you know how fast you are going?" I did, I had the GPS in the laptop in front of me. That is how I KNOW that the coach is very comfortable at 85+....
When we fueled, it worked out to 7.5 on that tank...

In all fairness, when I explained the situation, she got the plan. We didn't have that issue again. In fact, on out way back across the UP (Michigan again), she relaxed and ran low and we turned in a 10.6 and 12.1. We can still run up there (with a 9460# 23') if we are careful and taking out time.
