Good Morning
To update everyone, after our 1600 mile round trip this past Memorial Day
weekend the entire bottom of my coach was soaked in oil from the engine back. I
initially thought it was coming from the final drive left shaft seal, but after
doing further analysis the final drive was only 6 oz low on lube, no where near
enough to soak the entire bottom of the coach, plus the fluid on the underside
is a much lighter viscosity than the gear lube in the final drive.
So what would be your thoughts on where to look next ?
1. Transmission to final drive PEE HOLE which is between the 2 seals where the
transmission shaft enters the final?? This is apparently there so if the 1st
seal leaks, trans fluid does not enter the final drive.
2. I have a ragusa trans pan cover and it has a new gasket, this is not where
the leak is.
3. CRAZY THOUGHT....I have the vent fitting on the top of the transmission
with a hose going over to the frame and hanging there. Could the wind passing
over the hose suck out fluid? Seems like a stretch.
I have completely de-greased the underside of my coach with Gunk and a high
pressure washer, this weekend I will take several short runs and then do more
detailed checking to see if I can find where the leak/oil is coming from.
All help or ideas are appreciated.

Be sure to check the transmission cooler lines that attach at the top of the transmission. I had a leak once that drove me crazy. I had transmission fluid over the bottom of the transmission and it had blown back over the engine and even on the fuel tanks.
I thought it might be a pan seal leak but I replaced the gasket and it still was there.
I found it by using a flashlight while running the engine. There was just a small film of fluid leaking from one fitting. It ran to the front and down along the front of the transmission down to the front of the pan where it was blown back.

Are you sure its not the front crankshaft seal? If it leaks the passenger side from the engine pulleys back to the mufflers will be dripping oil. If you find it is this seal I would suggest you replace it with a high temperature rated one.

Thanks Roy, I will look at this.
This leak is bad, I had an oil coating from the front all the way to the back
bumper and enough collected at points for it to drip. I need to pull my rear
gas tank this weekend and if I hadn't washed down the undercarriage it would
have been a horrific filthy job.

I hear ya on the wind Dan, especially when we drove 800 miles in the 65 to 70
MPH range. Those drops get spread out pretty thin.

Check your power steering pump to be sure it is full. That is a lightweight
fluid. A little will look like a lot when blown by wind. If you have everything
cleaned up, look at the power steering line. I am thinking you will spot
something soon. Glad it is not the final drive. I thought that was kinda quick
for that to happen. I had about 30,000 on my 370 before it started leaking.

I had the same thing. It appeared to be coming from the from of the trans pan. From the cooler line connections, it goes through a worm hole in the rib, onto the top of the trans, down the right side, onto the valve body... Slopes forward onto the front of the pan where the air turbulence takes it everywhere. It was especially bad after a stop as it ran off the valve body... Forward.
I also chased an engine oil leak. It was where the oil filter adaptor bolts to the block. Ran down behind the starter and got everywhere.

Larry,
You're correct; Peter Bailey and I took Mark to buy the foot powder.
According to him it worked great.
They had two brands at the supermarket and we wanted to know which one would
leave the most residue. I figgered the best way to find out was to spray
some on the back of my hands.
It worked BUT there were some comments about me smelling like a French you
know what and I was instructed to stick my hands out the window!

One of the things we learned at the Shawnee rally, as a result of Mark
Hogenboom's big leak problem was to wash everything dow throughly with Brake
Clean, the spray...I think it was either baby powder or foot powder all over
the suspected area. Then take a SHORT drive. The source of the leak should
show up right away. If I got this wrong, someone please correct me....

This is frustrating...
Got the coach on level ground today, trans oil was low and engine oil was low
after our 800 mile return trip from Toronto. I topped them off per the dip
sticks.
Took a long test drive.
Came home, let the coach cool down......laid under the coach for 2 hours in
today's 90 degree heat. No oil on bottom of coach.
1. Power Steering is not leaking
2. Transmission cooler lines at trans are not leaking.
3. Some very minor valve cover leakage but not enough to even run down the
engine let alone soak the bottom of the coach.
4. I have the fitting on the trans vent with a hose going down and hanging
below the dirvers side frame rail, it had a few drops dripping, COULD THE
HOSE IN THE POSITION IT'S HANGING ACT AS A VENTURI AND THE MOVING AIR SUCK
OUT FLUID AT 70 MPH? Seems like a stretch.
5. Some leakage where the oil cooler lines connect to the oil filter adapter, I
will replace that gasket.
This all started when I put in the new 3:70 final drive, never had a drop of any
oil under the coach until the......what the heck could be going on ???
Any help is appreciated !

Ray,
I don't know how a vent that is "hanging below the drivers side frame rail,"
could get oil back over under the engine/trans.
You could tie wrap a plastic bottle to the frame rail and stick the end of
the vent into the bottle and see if any fluid collects.
IIRC KenH has a setup like that. He's an environmentally friendly fella! ;-)
I just thought of something, if you went from a 3.07 to a 3.70 the engine
rpm would go up; could that change cause something to start leaking or
venting?

sticks.
Took a long test drive.
Came home, let the coach cool down......laid under the coach for 2 hours in

below the dirvers side frame rail, it had a few drops dripping, COULD

HOSE IN THE POSITION IT'S HANGING ACT AS A VENTURI AND THE MOVING AIR SUCK
OUT FLUID AT 70 MPH? Seems like a stretch.
5. Some leakage where the oil cooler lines connect to the oil filter
adapter, I
will replace that gasket.
This all started when I put in the new 3:70 final drive, never had a drop of
any
oil under the coach until the......what the heck could be going on ???
Any help is appreciated!

It is called a "road draft tube." My 1965 Mustang had one... when I had a 1965 Mustang. It was used to remove blow-by from the crankcase. That is handled by the PVC systems in "more modern" vehicles.
But, for it to pull liquid from the trans vent, the transmission would have to be overfilled or something.

Something just came to mind, what if my engine temp gauge is off and I'm running
hot, not hot enough to burn the tranny fluid, just hotter than I should be,
would that cause the tranny fluid to expand more than normal and exit the vent?
Thinking I may want to try putting the severe duty fan clutch (15-4644) back on
to see if that makes a difference.
Thoughts ??
I'm grasping at anything I can think of here.

My exact thoughts mike.
Yesterday when I checked my trans fluid, it would not even read on the
dip-stick, dip-stick was dry, yet the transmission shifted and performed
perfect. I would have to add at least a gallon of fluid to make it read
correctly on the dip stick.
The oil I'm getting on the underside of the coach is thin like trans fluid too.
