Hi Guys
I've got a leaking left final drive seal, how hard is this to replace ???
I've contacted Jim Kan-O-Tomatoes to see if I can get a new seal, are any
special tools needed? I can grab a seal locally if it's something standard.
Thanks
Ray

Ray, a few words of caution about seal replacement. First, check the
lubricant for any presence of ATF. If it is pink at all, the duplex seal
between the final drive and the transmission is leaking transmission fluid
forward into the final drive. If this is the case, you are going to have to
pull the final drive and replace the sea. Second, what I often do when
replacing a seal is to take a very sharp scratch awl and punch a hole in
the metal part of the seal. Use a slide hammer with a self tapping screw on
the end and screw it into the hole that you punched. A few strokes with the
slide hammer, and the seal is out. Sometimes on a stubborn seal, more than
one hole will have to be punched. While you have the CV flange out, inspect
the area that the seal runs on. They can become quite worn. If it is
grooved, there is a product called a "speedy sleeve" that can be used to
repair them. On the big seal on the passenger side of the final drive,
there is an "up" side to the seal and it must be installed with the 2
little weep holes towards the top of the case. Also, make sure the gasket
on the cover is installed correctly and that the vent near the top bolt
hole is open.

Look here, There is less likely that the seal is at fault.
It is probably the venting system and also a wrong cover.
Don't waste your time .

Ray, I had so many leaks, on that engine and tranny, I did not know that the final drive was leaking. Jim's mechanic saw it and we had him fix it. I hate any leaks. This engine has 6,000 miles on it, John in Tucson fixed the tranny leaks, no oily spots in my driveway now. I also had a stock 307 leak on same side and the bearing started failing. Jim will take care of you.
