Hi Bob,
Regarding your fuel level light:
I suggest replacing the LED with an incandescent bulb first, to see if the light functions normally again. If so, then the problem is that the circuit expects to see an incandescent bulb, which pulls more current than an LED.
You can "spoof" the circuit into seeing an incandescent bulb there by using a ballast resistor is parallel with the LED. These resistors are available from many LED vendors. They are usually used to help turn-signal flashers to function with LEDs. It should not affect the brightness of the LED.
