Good Morning
Just got back from north of Toronto, had a great trip and put on about 1,600
miles. Coach ran like a top ! Saw 2 other GMC's along the way, a Green Palm
Beach at the border coming back into the U.S. at Port Huron and a Cream & Blue
one on I94.
3 small problems....
1. Bad gas smell in the coach when I filled the tanks completely full (I had
posted this earlier), when I only put in 20 gallons at a time, no smell. I will
drop the rear tank to see what's going on. Will drop both tanks if necessary.
Just dropped the tanks last August to check how clean they were, etc. and didn't
have any problems last fall. Kind of a pain to drop the tanks again, but oh well
!
2. Fuse on the dedicated main line to the leveling system compressors keeps
blowing, I built my new leveling system several years ago and never had this
problem. I replace the fuse, start up, the systems levels, when I stop for gas
I check it and the fuse is blown. It's a dedicated line from a fuse block
directly under the hood back to the compressors. I will check the entire line
for a wear spot, rodent damage or ???
3. THIS I NEED TO FIX FAST....The auxiliary brake vac pump does not always kick
in when vac is low. Crawling through Chicago traffic yesterday I hit the brakes
and the dang pedal hits the floor....this also happened in Toronto crawling
across the 401 in rush hour.....GEEZ !!! Then all of a sudden it kicks in.
Can those vac switches be replaced ??
Overall a great trip, this is even hard for me to believe, but I kept dead nuts
mileage and gas usage records and we averaged 10.2 MPG. That's with the new
3:70 final drive and running about 70 MPH on the freeways. Also according to my
records our mileage since the installation of the 3:70 has averaged 9.35 MPG as
compared to 8.95 with the 3:42 final drive that came with our coach. The only
other change this spring is I had Dick Paterson rebuild that carb which has been
great. The coach now starts perfect, fast idle works, etc.
All input is appreciated, thanks and have a great day !

Ray, there is no way a vacuum problem will cause the pedal to go to the floor. Low vacuum will cause a hard pedal. I suspect your master cylinder.

Ray,
I can't help with the second two, but the gas smell in the cab is probably a shot fill vent hose that comes up the side in that lump behind your left elbow. You have to get under the side panel to replace it. You will also need to remove the front wheel well liner.
This hose goes from the fill neck back to the frame where it ties into a steel line. You might as well replace it all.
You should also look at the caulk around the fill neck. What ever they put there didn't last and any spill ends up in the coach.

Hi Bob
So what specifically could be wrong with the master cylinder ??? I had replaced
that in 07.
It's really strange, when in stop and go traffic like the construction zones in
Chicago, all of a sudden the pedal will go to the floor. If I can get rolling
and put more power to the engine, the pedal goes back to normal.
I appreciate your help!

Ray, there are several things that can cause the pedal to go to the floor: failing master cylinder, a leak in the system, caliper knock back due to loose wheel bearing (s), water in the fluid which can boil when hot, and finally brake fade if really hot. I strongly suspect the master cylinder and it's not unusual for a rebuilt unit to fail within 4 or 5 years. If you haven't flushed the fluid for a while it may have water in it and that will only show up when hot such as in stop and go traffic. Personally I would try a new master cylinder and thoroughly flush the fluid. Both of those are inexpensive and easy to do.

Ray,
When you replaced the gas lines did you replace the vent line that connects
at the filler neck? To get to it you have to remove the driver side panel or
cut the vertical surround around the filler neck.
!'d give Dick's rebuild job more of the credit for the increased fuel
mileage than the final drive.

IIRC: The bolts for the bracket that holds the straps for the rear tank are "hidden" behind the front tank. SO... you pretty much have to drop the front tank to drop the rear one.
For your "fuse blowing compressors," I would run a 12 volt "stiff power" line from the compressors to the house battery... with an appropriate sized circuit breaker. With a Royale, there should be a good point to tap into the house system at the aft end of the heavy cable running between the two house batteries. (But the battery side of the house fuse panel would be good second choice.) For anyone with an GM upfitted coach, there is a junction block behind the cabinet next to the stove.
Due to fewer switches and connections, this mod should provide higher voltages at the pumps, so the pumps will draw less current. If after this mod, the new circuit breakers keep tripping, I would suspect you have a pump going bad.

Yep - front first.
Ray - let me know if you want some help with this. It may be easier to do it here than in your driveway, or the street.

Thanks Matt, I had both of my tanks out last August so I'm familiar with these
bolts. Need to borrow a bore-scope from work first so I can take a loot at
what's going on above the tanks first.
I don't mind working on the GMC but doing REWORK really frustrates me, it would
be nice to fix something and have it FIXED ! Now it's drop the tank AGAIN, AND
after replacing my final drive in September I find out after this last trip that
I have a final drive seal leak on the left output shaft, dang entire bottom of
the coach is oily, so another thing I just fixed that I can fix AGAIN......

Let me tell you very first hand that I believed this also, but this Sunday in
Hamilton, we discovered that the rear tank can be dropped alone with little
difficulty.
The front tank bracket (both tanks) has three screws through the transverse
frame. The straps are held at the rear by nuts run on two J-hooks in the
transverse frame to the rear of each tank. Unfortunately, those two straps of
the forward tank are in front of the outer pair of screws of the rear tank.
What to Do ??
Slack those straps of the front tank until they will move and tap them aside
just a little - enough to get room to get a socket with a u-joint on those outer
screws.
Why? We didn't make note of the fact that the replacement sensor/pickup had the
fuel and vent connections reversed.
