Would anyone have the part number of a "three terminal" turn signal flasher for my 78 Royale?
I searched an earlier discussion (2010) about two different flashers, one for signal and one for emergency. My 4way flasher(2 prong) works fine but I need the turn flasher (3 prong). I went to the parts store and asked for a tridon EL12 but it turns out to be a two terminal flasher.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

You need one that is similar to Autozone EG23. It's a 3 pin.

Early coaches shared the hazard and turn signal flasher but due to federal requirements, later coaches had separate flashers. The hazard is the 2 pin and the turn flasher is 3 pin. Most auto parts stores should be able to look up a 78 Toronado or find any 3 pin flasher in the bin.

Ross,
The hazard and TS flashers are both supposed to be 2 terminal (Prong)
units and both use the same flasher. I don't see any 3 wire flasher
shown in the wiring diagrams for the 77 or 78 chassis. The EL-12
should be a good number. 76 and earlier coaches used only a single
flasher.

The turn signal flasher I have is 3 prong, with metal casing, 3/4" diameter by 2" long. I went into auto zone's site but it shows the EG23 being clear plastic and with the pin configuration different than mine. Both the turn signal and 4way flashers are located next to each other under my dash so I assume what I have pulled is a flasher.

Ross--my flasher is also a 3 pin--go for the number I posted earlier.

I also looked at the wiring diagram for the 1978 GMC and it shows two terminals on the flasher but there are three wires, two wires go to the same terminal.

It could be that the three terminal flasher has two of the terminals connected together internally.

Please look at the connector and tell us if that has three spade receptacles in it or whether there are only two. This might clear up this issue for some of us.
Sometimes a three terminal flasher can be plugged into a two terminal connector and it will work just fine.

Emery, there are three wires and three blade receptacles. Were the original signal flashers metal or did mine have a change along the way?

Thanks, Ross. Then I suspect that two of those terminals are internally connected inside the flasher since the wiring diagram show two wires going to the same side of the internal circuit.

The original flasher case was metal. A lot of newer flashers are now plastic as the manufacturers can make them cheaper that way.
Both should work.

I bought an electronic flasher at the autoparts store a couple of years ago and it had a plastic case. It flashes steady no matter how many bulbs are in the circuit. This is especially nice when pulling a toad. It is a little more expensive than the mechanical one but more reliable and no internal points to burn.

Very interesting! That may explain why some show both 2 and 3 terminal flashers for this application.

I suspect the original ones were in a metal case since they used a heating element and a bi-metallic strip to open and close the circuit with the heating and cooling of the bi-metallic strip.

Plastic would have melted.

New ones use electronic circuits to make and break.

Ross - funny you should mention that. Once on "our" coach I was in Florida. I'm not much of a flasher user, but in this case I was towing and had to park on the side of a street. When I came back, I forgot to turn the flashers off and all the way home I was cussing "our" coach because the directional signals didn't work.

Not sure when I discovered it, but when I cut the flashers off, everything else worked. Not sure if this will help you, but it sure made me feel better.

Also, don't forget that this is a Coachmen coach, so all bets are off.

yes both 3 and 2 terminal systems exist in the GMC

infact

you can buy a kit here to make a sounder for either system and one for
leaving the head lights on.

I'm thinking the 2 prong flasher will not let you know if a bulb is burned out like the 3 prong unit will.

Took my flasher over to Napa to try to match up a new one. An old timer at the desk took a look at it and said he never saw a flasher like that. We couldn't match up the prong configuration.
This time I took the cover off below the dash and there was a flasher clipped to the steering column. Rule of thumb, trust old guys. Whatever I had wasn't a flasher, maybe a relay of some type. Picked up the new EL12 and installed it but still no turn signals.
I even took off the EL12 from the 4way flasher and put it on the signal but no luck. I took the old signal flasher and put it on the 4way and it worked fine.
About a week ago I was backing into my driveway the 4ways weren't working but the signals were fine. Last Saturday went to take a drive to the lake, then I started having problems with my signal not working. Thought maybe the signal and 4way flashers were feeding through each other. Guess not.
Now I am stumped.

Ross - I know I wrote this before, but if the flasher knob on that particular coach, which we both know and love, is pulled out (engaged) the directional signals will not work. If I recall correctly, the knob on the steering column was very tricky (worn out).

Somehow or another, they are connected. Could be magic.

Or just needing a new turn-signal switch in the steering column. I
replaced mine a year or so ago with a part that I found on the Help!
rack at (?) an Autozone. (Help! is, of course, what used to be called
Dorman). The emergency flasher switch is part of the same assembly
behind the steering wheel. With a steering wheel puller and spring
compressor, it's not a ard job at all to replace those old plastic
switch components. Don't forget the switch lubricant.

I replaced mine last week on my '78, EL52. The fuse was also blown, so had to replace that as well.

Ross,

What are the colors of the 3 wires to your not-turn-signal "flasher"?

If Brown, Yellow, and Brown w/Double White Stripe, then you've discovered
the Electrolevel time delay relay. It turns off the "Set Travel Auto"
tell-tale after 30 seconds or so.
