Our Onan runs well but the new(5 months)starter
stays engaged sometimes. When it starts it
disengages ok. Won't quit with the stop button.
Thanks
Bill

Bill,

Double Trouble's Onan had the same problem and I removed the starter and
lubricated the shaft the gear that engages the flywheel rides on with
Valvoline Synpower and that cured the problem.

While you're removing the starter you can verify that the starter bracket
isn't broken, if it is get one a cast iron one from Ragusa.

Click on Engine Items and it's the first part listed. It's P/N RV-04.

Rob M.

I have helped a couple of GMCers with the same problem. I felt it was an alignment problem My solution was to put a thin washer between one side of the starter and the Onan. This gives a little bit more clearance to allow the gear to retract.

The electric choke on mine was disconnected when I bought it. I reattached the choke power and intermittently the starter would not electrically disengage. It would run with the starter relay would not disengage. I had to disconnect the power (heavy wire) to enable shut down of the onan. I disconnected the electric choke and it behaved. Never did figure what was wrong. I did substitute a different control board and traced the wires to insure there was no bare spots and pulled the flywheel to inspect the run armature.

View was not worth the climb. Juice not worth the squeeze.

Ernest,

You reminded me of something! I called Duane Simmons when the problem first
occurred and he told me to disconnect the electric choke and see what
happened. When I did that the problem stopped.

I left the choke wire disconnected and when it re-occurred that's when I
lubed the starter shaft and that corrected the problem the second time.

Duane explained what was causing the problem, however, since I didn't
remember the incident until your message I damn sure don't remember his
explanation! ;-)

Regards,
Rob M.

Sometimes the starter rely needs to be replaced.
