Well I took the Pig out for a test drive on Wednesday to kind of shake the monster and see what falls out as well as stop by and visit my friends and neighbors at Davis Door whom I mooch much of my needed aluminum bits for the continuing project. Davis Door is not like a residential garage or entry door company as they build custom commercial doors for shopping malls/ Boeing etc. My current favor for Davis Door is to fabricate a new box for the propane tank. Jeff and Mike were quite surprised when they came outside and took it all in. As usual, the shop foreman (Mike) came up with a really good idea for the tank enclosure which will seal the tank off from the inside of the coach while still allowing the heavily modified, originally driver side bunk to hover over the propane tank on the passenger side. His plan will still allow the bench portion of the bunk to hinge open providing storage around the tank enclosure. I hope to have the box by early next week as the maiden voyage is scheduled for next Friday when my son and I with one of his friends head Southeast to Packwood Washington for a two day motorcycle race.
I completed the 10 block drive without mirrors,seatbelts,bumpers,and the rear body panel including back glass but I have seen worse cruising down Rainier ave. The trip was without incident and I even got the Howell injected Pig to smoke the tires out front of Davis Door. Pretty cool actually. The new exhaust with single spintech muffler sounds good even with no carpet/interior/completely open rear body.
Tuesday my friend from Tru-Line frame came down to finish the alignment by setting the rear(we had set the front last week). When we checked toe we realized what I had been fearing a bit for awhile after reassembly of the rear suspension. I had noticed what appeared to be a visual toe variation between the right front rear and the right rear and indeed there was an issue. The rearmost wheels had 5/8" of toe out. This explained the funky wear on the tires I noticed after buying the coach. Correction was not a big deal however as a porto-power in conjunction with a floor jack pushed the offending bogie back straight with an unexpected bonus of improving camber on that wheel. Now all six are ready to hit the highway.
The timeclock is ticking on my deadline for next weekend. My offroad bike is ready but my supermoto bike is still uncompleted and my sons off road bike needs maint(offroad race Saturday, Supermoto on Sunday). Hoping to drive the Pig back and forth to work next week to gain a little confidence in it. The new Sullybilt rear suspension really makes the coach look tough. Much tougher than the hot dogged skinny originals. The bags are one of the few systems which are on the checked off with emphasis list.

Enjoyed reading your update. From your photo albums your coach is looking terrific. I especially like the look of the rear wheel wells.
Is the coach's name WarpPig -- as in your message subject -- or WarPig, which I thought I had read in another message.

More like I'm Being Entertained. Abundantly so. :-(
Didn't touch it today though -- had to disassemble my laptop to put 1/10 of
a drop of oil on the fan bearing so I can hear the 'phone ring over its
noise. I think I'd rather R&R the Cad. AMAZING engineering goes into
designing these things. Fantastically intricate and precise bits & pieces
to be fit together exactly so and with no deviations. They sure never
taught me how to do such things during my MSEE classes. :-)
(Of course the 300 baud modem I designed and built for my thesis was "state
of the art" back ('Way Back) then.)

The semester before I bought my HP-35 (full scientific -- $414.75 w/CA
tax), I took a numerical analysis course. With the computer center always
full of students with stacks of IBM punch cards, I did a lot of my homework
on those old Marchants. Thus the scrimping & saving to buy the HP-35 on
the day they were released. :-)

I waited a year or two and bought the TI (SR-51?)
when the priced dropped to $150. It's still around
someplace, but battery went bad and no direct
replacement around. I bought a 3-cell phone battery
and hard-wired it in for awhile but then upgraded.

Well I have a new development with the pig. It seems like it my not be getting enough slop. Ran fine early last week when I went for the initial cruise to Davis Door but had to switch tanks when heading up the ramp out of the building as it started to cut out and lose power. With the tanks switched all was good til friday. Went to pull it out for the first bath since purchase and had issues on the ramp. Regardless of selected tank, the Pig burped stumbled and coughed on the ramp. I believe I have one or more of the following.
1 insufficient fuel( I don't think so as tanks were filled before initiation of restoration however I could have been fooled by early burp syndrome or trapped fuel vapor on fill up)
2 plugged pickups in the tank. I put my money on this but who knows

Oops wasnt done when I let that one fly
3 soft fuel line which is collapsing from fuel pump suction (with some help from dirty fuel pickup?)
4 something else entirely.
Guess away. I will be investigating tomorrow morning if work allows.

If you are still running a carb I would suspect the inline filter going into the carb supply.

No longer running a carb but TB fuel injection and EBL. New pump and lines from tank selector forward. Lines heading to tank replaced by p.o. At some time past.

Maybe the filter socks on the tank pickup are clogged. Some have
suggested using compressed air to just blow them off without dropping the
tanks. Also might be the lines are compressed above the tank. If they
didn't route the lines properly in the channels on the top of the tank they
can compress against the floor.

Well the Pig made it home without a glitch! 10 or so miles with city and hiway driving including a little bumper to bumper traffic. When I got home I ran the barbarian under load for a half hour since it has not been able to stretch its legs for many months and it functioned flawlessly as well. The run ability issue which I thought could be fuel restriction appears to present itself when the coach is left to idle for extended periods. When I went to drive out of the building yesterday(after checking fuel flow from aux tank) I headed straight up the ramp with minimal idle time and the motor ran fine. The last time I tried and failed, I let the coach idle for 10 minutes or so. This morning in my driveway I Let the coach idle for 10 minutes or so as I loaded it with parts and it exhibited similar run ability issues to when I could not get up the shop ramp. Loading up at idle??????
I could not believe how well the coach drove home. It required less steering inputs than my 00 f350 crew cab diesel on the freeway and my truck loves the freeway. I had a hard time not spinning the tires when leaving stop signs or turning under throttle. Liking it big time!

Todd, I forgot to tell you about the adaptive capability of the GM ECU. The
system runs much better after it has time to "learn" all the info from the
sensors. If you stop and think about it when you first start the engine
from cold, the basic programming controls the engine RPM because the
signals from the temperature sensor and O2 sensor are out of range. Until
the engine coolant comes into range, the ECU goes back to the basic chip
programming, usually more air in the mix along with more fuel injection
band width, resulting in a faster RPM when cold. When the ECU goes into
"closed loop" then all the sensors are controlling fuel mixture. There is a
"slow speed stumble" which is I think what you are experiencing, and it is
a little difficult to eliminate. I worked on Ken Petersons poor running
cold temp , and it is much better now. Jeff Fraisure has had similar
issues, and seems to have solved them. Maybe he can be encouraged to help
out. I will see him at the Pacific City Rally the second weekend in June.
Throw some sand paddles on those motocross bikes and bring them down to
the Sand Lake gathering following the Rally. Get your heads together and
see what you can come up with. I like the way the Howell works when it is
warmed up. You are right, that 455 will burn many miles off the front
tread. I like it!!
