Oil Change instructions for Women:
1. Pull up to Dealership when the mileage reaches 5,000 miles since the last oil change.
2. Relax in the waiting room while enjoying a cup of coffee.
3. 15 minutes later, scan debit card and leave, driving a properly maintained vehicle.
Money spent:
Oil Change:$24.00
Coffee: Complementary
TOTAL: $24.00
Oil Change instructions for Men:
1. Wait until Saturday, drive to auto parts store and buy a case of oil, filter, kitty litter, hand cleaner and a scented tree, and use your debit card for $50.00.
2. Stop to buy a case of beer, (debit $24), drive home.
3. Open a beer and drink it.
4. Jack truck up. Spend 30 minutes looking for jack stands.
5. Find jack stands under kid's pedal car.
6.. In frustration, open another beer and drink it.
7. Place drain pan under engine.
8. Look for 9/16 box end wrench.
9. Give up and use crescent wrench.
10. Unscrew drain plug.
11. Drop drain plug in pan of hot oil: splash hot oil on you in process. Cuss.
12. Crawl out from under truck to wipe hot oil off of face and arms. Throw kitty litter on spilled oil.
13. Have another beer while watching oil drain.
14. Spend 30 minutes looking for oil filter wrench.
15. Give up; crawl under truck and hammer a screwdriver through oil filter and twist off.
16. Crawl out from under truck with dripping oil filter splashing oil everywhere from holes. Cleverly hide old oil filter among trash in trash can to avoid environmental penalties. Drink a beer.
17. Install new oil filter making sure to apply a thin coat of oil to gasket surface.
18. Dump first quart of fresh oil into engine.
19. Remember drain plug from step 11.
20. Hurry to find drain plug in drain pan.
21. Drink beer.
22. Discover that first quart of fresh oil is now on the floor. Throw kitty litter on oil spill.
23. Get drain plug back in with only a minor spill. Drink beer.
24. Crawl under truck getting kitty litter into eyes. Wipe eyes with oily rag used to clean drain plug. Slip with stupid crescent wrench tightening drain plug and bang knuckles on frame removing any excess skin between knuckles and frame.
25. Begin cussing fit.
26. Throw stupid crescent wrench.
27. Cuss for additional 5 minutes because wrench hit truck and left dent.
28. Beer.
29. Clean up hands and bandage as required to stop blood flow.
30. Beer.
31. Dump in five fresh quarts of oil.
32. Beer.
33. Lower truck from jack stands.
34. Move truck back to apply more kitty litter to fresh oil spilled during any missed steps.
35. Beer.
36. Test drive truck.
37. Get pulled over: arrested for driving under the influence.
38. Truck gets impounded.
39. Call loving wife, make bail.
40. 12 hours later, get truck from impound yard. Money spent:
Parts: $50.00
DUI: $2,500.00
Impound fee: $75.00
Bail: $1,500.00
Beer: $20.00
TOTAL: $4,145.00
But you know the job was done right!

Very funny, Bruce. I don't drink beer and I like to think my tools are a little better organized than that, but the rest rings pretty true. A couple steps I could add at the end, in lieu of getting arrested for DUI, are;
sweep up kitty litter,
spray driveway with Simple Green,
get down on hands and knees and scrub with brush,
hose down driveway.

Funny but too true...
and may I suggest a few additions,,,,
Begin by getting on GMClist and asking what oil filter number to use and what type of oil....oh, and what size wrench for drain plug.
Try to research the replies about using a magnet around the oil filter.
Learn that oil leaks may originate from the front seal.
Wash down engine and add talcum powder to determine if oil is leaking.
Look for the free test kit for oil analysis.
Try to understand what tube socke have to do with stopping oil leaks.

I'll add one:
Begin by getting on GMClist and asking what oil filter number to use and what type of oil....oh, and what size wrench for drain
plug.
Get a link from that guy in Australia to the Maintenance Manual and Parts book on Bdub's website. ;-)

I was at a Hot Rod show a month ago and stopped by this Vendors stand.
Have a look at their product and their claims that
the Mobile 1 we have been using is not right for us.

It is Still a good addition to run a ZDDP additive with the Mobile 1
oil. I have used the Cam Shield Oil additive ($23.95) ( and you can
get it from Jim K) <http://www.appliedgmc.com/prod.itml/icOid/1018>
with very good results. Another product that has come on the market
recently is the Rislone Engine Oil Supplement with Zinc Treatment
($7.99). <http://barsproducts.com/catalog/view/22-engine-oil-supplement-with-zinc-treatment-4401
>. This brings your oil back to pre-reduction levels. Both work
with Synthetic and petroleum based oils. The one advantage that a
synthetic oil offer is that you can lengthen out the miles between oil
changes to 5000 miles without problems. The cost per change favors
the Cam Shield as you get more changes per dollar spent.
Well, he wants to sell you his product for flat tappet motors. There
are large number of them on the market today and they work too, but
they can cost a lot per quart.

As far as whether or not you need ZDDP in a broken in engine I rather err on the conservative side.
I have not verified if the links in the message below still work but if you're interested in finding ZDDP additives it's a start. I
bought a gallon of SFR so I'm good to go for years.

I bought a gallon of this stuff last year after I got the following information from them:
QUESTION 1): Does SFR 100 contain ZDDP?
RESPONSE: Normal motor oil when it contained ZDDP averaged 300 ppm. SFR when added at 3% or 1 ounce per quart of motor oil averages
over 900 ppm. There is over 30,000 ppm in SFR 100 concentrate.
QUESTION 2): How much SFR 100 should I add to 5 quarts of oil to get 1200-1400 PPM of ZDDP in oil that does not contain any ZDDP?
RESPONSE: I would add 1 1/2 ounces per quart or the recommended dosage for first time use and 1 ounce per quart of motor oil with
each and every oil change.
QUESTION 3) Can I add too much SFR 100?
RESPONSE: You can use up to 10% or 3 ounces per quart. After that it is not economical based on testing that we have run. You will
get outstanding results by using 1 1/2 ounces of SFR per quart of motor oil the first time, and 1 ounce per quart of motor oil
subsequent oil changes.

Rob,
You're making my head hurt.
I used a quart of Rislone with zinc as part of the fill up for the Cad
break-in. Unless I hear something to change my mind, I intend to continue
to do the same in the future. At $7.95 per quart, it's little more
expensive than the quart of Rotella T it replaces, and appears to solve the
cam/lifter problem.
