In less than a month 4 of us (3 on motorcycles and me in my Blazer) plan to head to Alaska on a 5 week trip. One of the guys can't seem to get by without a cell phone.

I have been looking at prepaid plans in Canada for him and my head is swimming trying to figure them out.

Has anyone got any recommendations for one or two month voice coverage from Manitoba northwest to the Yukon. I realize there are vast areas with no coverage along that route. I am mostly looking for cheap coverage in areas where there is cell service.

I've heard of people buying a cheap phone and then buying cards with minutes on them. That saves the roaming charge. He may also be able to make a deal with his phone supplier to avoid the roaming charges.

You can find areas covered here.
It looks good up to around Prince George, BC.
Then it thins out...
Your friend can always stop along the way and use a pay phone if he feels the need to talk to his Mommy.

I bet you can just go to any big box store in Canada and get the pre paid phones like we have here in the states. They will have the coverage areas and so on at the stores.

I usually head up to Canada twice a year and Verizon doesn't have a plan
where we can add Canada coverage for say two months. We would have to
change our whole plan to one that included calling from within Canada.
It has been recommended that we just get a burner phone for the duration.

Anyway, it's a good idea for at least one of you to have a cell phone in
case of emergency.

You might also look at Sat. phones.

I understand those costs have come down.

I think that is what I would do.

Hi Ken

Do you (they) have an unlocked phone or do they need to buy one?

The best coverage will be from Telus. Bell and Virgin use or share the
Telus cell towers so their coverage should be the same.

Virgin seems to have the best price.
http://www.virginmobile.ca/en/plans/prepaid-plans-summary.html?itcid=NAV:9
Calls to US are $.35/minute

Koodo (a Telus subsidiary) has some good deals
https://shop.koodomobile.com/plans/plans/index.html
They do not appear to have a prepaid plan but they do not require a contract
so you can cancel at any time.
They have a LD Saver plan ($2.00/month) that drops the cost of calls to US
to $.05 /minute, long distance calls in Canada are free.
It might be worth a phone call to see how they would handle a one or two
month activation, or alternatively, don't tell them and just cancel after
you are done.

Manitoba has their own cell phone company so coverage there is basically
limited to Winnipeg unless you are a Manitoba Telephone System (MTS)
subscriber.

Telus, Bell, Virgin, and Koodo use CDMA and HSPA phones (I think they are
running 800MHz and 1900MHz) I believe that is the same as Verizon.

Here is one more option.

Combines both cell and sat service.

Thanks Dave. That is the kind of info I needed. This I have to have a cell phone mentality really gets me. After he gets one, it will be interesting to see what he does as he goes north.

I wonder what Sgt. Preston did when he went north? What was his dog's name? Was is King?

Ken, I have taken that trip at least 8 times and have used my regular ATT service with no problems top to bottom. Yes there are some roaming charges but they aren't worth worrying about. It's not a 3rd world country.

I talked to a ham radio friend in Fort St. John for about a hour tonight. Between Dave Mumert and my friend I think I have enough info to pass on to one of the cell phone dependent bikers.

Thanks every one.

For me I do not need no stinking cell phone. I'm on vacation.

Adding Canada to the plan is new then. Just make sure it's *calling from
within Canada* and not *calling to Canada*. I tried last summer and also
talked to a cousin-in-law who lives in Indiana and travels back like we do.

Richard 76 Glenbrook
at the Castle in Colorado, getting ready to leave

We plan on leaving Indiana on June 14th and need to be in Dawson, YKT on June 21. After that, the schedule is pretty much wide open. If you see three motorcycles and a Green Blazer, that's us. As always, I'll be watching for GMC's.
