Has anyone tackled replacing the awning fabric on a Dometic awning? Is it best left to a shop that does them all the time, or is it easy enough to not waste the money? Mine lasted 9yrs in AZ.

I was looking at mine last week and it looks like the fabric just slides into the roller. That being said i think i have heard these guys say getting the fabric was a problem. I think you may have to order from another mfg. But the installation seems simple enough.

Ted,

I haven't attempted a replacement, but I have a couple of times had to
partially remove & re-install the fabric. It's not a bad job, but also not
a one-man job. In fact, it's probably not even a two-man job if doing the
whole shebang because the fabric needs to go into both the fixed rail on
the coach and the roller at the same time -- and someone's got to hold the
fabric up horizontal to feed it into each of those slots while someone
pulls it in. Two Holders and two Pullers would probably be best.
Dependent on the type fabric used, a lubricant like non-abrasive hand soap
may be a big help too.

The replacement fabric should be readily available -- Camping World use to
show it in their catalogs, which I haven't received for a long time.

Let me know when I can come be a Holder. I might even qualify as a Puller
if it goes in easily. :-)

I replaced the roller on the SOB I had and did not take the awning off the side of the camper, so one would surmise that if replacing the fabric you could install onto the camper/Motorhome and then slide the tube onto the fabric. (which is what I did)

there are instructions online and/or at different manufacturers web sites. there was no tension on the springs when I installed the canvas/awning material. the springs were tensioned after.
for the one I did it had a spring on both ends. the instructions stated something about removing the end of the tube at great personal risk and death and using vice grips to turn the little piece that connects to the spring yadda yadda.

I simply unhooked the bottom of the arm spun it around either clockwise or anticlockwise depending on which end it was on about half the turns it called for. then tried it. if it needed more I added one at a time until it wound up the way I wanted it.

it did take at least 2 people 4 would have been better. and a taller person would have been good for the holding part (my wife is 4 foot 10 and 3/4)

Once you replace everything that is attached to something else. It will all be fixed.
