I am interested in purchasing a GMC motorhome some time in the future. In the meantime I'm researching the internet in an attempt to learn more about them. I have seen many units for sale with an attached awning. To my eye, it detracts from the styling. Is there anyone here who does not use an attached awning?

We don't have one. It would be nice to have one occasionally but most of the time we don't stay long enough anywhere to make it worth the effort to extend one. If I did install one it would have to be one of those automatic ones that extend with a switch and retract automatically when the wind blows. Bottom of the list.

Larry,

We don't have and have no interest in an awning. Much like Armand, we seldom stay any place long enough that it would be any value to us. If you happen to find one you like, but it has an awning, buy it anyway. Remove the awning and store it carefully. In few years, sell it off when you are sure you won't want to have it.

We have an awning. I wish we did not. My lovely bride, and best friend, loves the awning. The problem, it is rotting as it has no metal cover when rolled up. I have for 2 years been trying to locate one that I consider affordable that will fit my Colorado Free mounts. The awning companies must be bitter enemies. When I talk with someone of another brand and tell them what I have, all they will do is tell me they can not help me. It will help keep the coach shaded from the sun and that is a good thing. Buy a coach without one then your wife, should you have one, will not know what she is missing.

My coach came with three simple A&E awnings. They are
very similar to old-fashioned window shades in their
operation. They unroll by pulling on a fabric tape
with a loop at the end is that then secured over a
small metal fixture at the bottom of the window.

There is one on each side of the rear sleeping area.
The third is larger and covers the two windows on the
forward left side of the coach. All three keep sun off
the glass until VERY late in the afternoon and help the
ACs to do their jobs. A P.O. also installed tinted windows!

I have bought some "Coolaroo" mesh to put over other
windows (and maybe the ones that already have the
awnings).

Maybe it isn't a big deal for those who live in cooler
climates, but the sun is hot and very persistent in
Oklahoma and nearby states in Summer. Any help to cool
things down is most welcome.

Thank you for the replies. To those who have the awning I assume the brackets hard mount through the skin of the motorhome. Even if I buy a unit with an awning and remove it, won't there be mounting holes to repair?

If you buy one and do not like it. I could possibly be looking for a good deal on an awning. this is something my wife really wants for the GMC. it is low on my list due to the cost.

holes can be repaired.

I do not have awnings on my GMC but I do have them on a travel trailer. I use the GMC differently than I do the trailer and I do not want them on the GMC. If you stay in one place for a while, you may use the awning but if you are on the move a lot, you may not. But do not let that effect which coach you buy. Awnings can be added or removed.
I am in the UP. There are a few coaches up here and quite a few more in Northern Lower Peninsula. The GMC Great Lakers have rallies in Michigan every year. It is a good opportunity to view different coaches.

Now I'm wondering if we've ever really missed not having one.

The advantage of these is being able to set it up where you want, not always attached to the side of the motorhome. The drawback is getting it out of the bin and putting it up and down. So far the argument is about 60/40 in favour,but I reckon if an awning like a Fiamma F65 came along cheap enough and big enough, the odds would change.

My wife and I enjoy our awning very much as we like to sit outside in the
shade while camping. Colorado high altitude sun can burn you in just
minutes. We also have an Easy-Up Canopy that we use to cover the picnic
table for shade.

We have two Zip-Dee awnings on our coach. The full length short one on the drivers side, and the full size awning on the passenger side. We live in our coach 4-5 months out of the year. Winters traveling the south, we use the awnings all of the time to shade the windows and keep the inside cooler. Also put the awnings out to keep rain from coming in the large windows. Personally we love the awnings and would not have a coach without them. Just Our Humble Opinion.

As you know The Blue Streak doesn't have an awning and I have two (one for the drivers side one for the passenger side) in the USA I
intend to have shipped here.

That's because Helen is of Scotch Irish descent and has the light "iridescent" skin that George Carlin used to joke about and can't
sit outside in the sun for long.

Having said that I have one of the awnings like you have but never thought of using it with the GMC.

There is one benefit that has not been mentioned, the awnings keep the direct sunlight from streaming into the windows which in turn
keeps the GMC cooler.

Armand,

JimB installed an automatic awning you mentioned below on the '26 Duramax coach. I was there when it was delivered and he told me it
was $5000! YES FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS!

Nowhere NEAR my list! ;-)
