I'm at Panama City Beach, FL with a need for some Duracool. My '96 Cadillac is in need of a shot of DC. Due to the cool weather at the Redneck Riviera, A/C is not a priority right now, but this Saturday I need to drive to Montgomery Alabama for a wedding. Nothing worse than a fat southerner in a sweaty tuxedo!
Anyone in the Florida panhandle or in LA (lower Alabama) or Greater Montgomery area with any Duracool? I have plenty at home in Americus, but it's the only thing I didn't bring with me. 2 weeks to go before we go home to Americus.
Thanks, in advance.

Stick,
IIRC when was working on Double Trouble at the COOP they could not put Duracool in it because it is illegal to sell in FL.

Thanks to all. Ken has suggested a couple of things I can do such as jumping the pressure switch. I need to run her on a couple of errands then I'll go to work.

Well, call off the troops, I guess. Our errands were run and the a/c performed flawlessly. I can only figure and agree with Ken H. who says that I'm running close to the edge of what will engage the pressure switch and the compressor.
I'm going to "let sleeping dogs lie" and leave it alone. If I have another failure, I have a paper clip I can jump the switch.
Thanks for the offers. I'll never again leave home without it.

I most states,it is ok to upgrade to R-134 (change the connectors - just
screw on adapters)
then it is legal to convert from R-234 to Duracool , which is noting more
than adding the duracool....
so
screw on the adapters and add duracool ( with the notice attached to the
rad.)
and you have made both conversions in one move ;>)

I think it is also "illegal" in Oklahoma, as well as
a whole lot of other states. I have seen a website
URL posted here some months back that showed the
extent of "illegality" nationwide.
If I were all that interested, I'd play with Google
to find out.
I have no idea whether my A/C system would even hold
refrigerant of ANY kind. I don't know of anybody local
that could help me with it.
I do have a case of D/C when I get around to pursuing
the dash air someday in the future.

I understand that the molecules in DC are larger than those in R-134. For some reason the charge has stayed good. I probably have the incorrect pressure switch on my car and if I recall, Ken and I didn't open another can thinking mine was close. Right now mine is making "ice cubes."

To be specific: Stick's original (purple-bodied) low pressure cut-off
switch failed (I/we may have stripped its plastic threads) so he bought a
new one from O'Reilly's. We noticed, but didn't worry about, that it had a
yellow (IIRC) body. With the yellow switch, the compressor shuts off when
the low side gets down to about 22 psi. Since we really wanted to get down
to 20 psi for best cooling, we were faced with a irreconcilable parameters.
So we charged to about 22-24 psi. That gives him good cooling, but more
frequent than desirable compressor cycling. When he's done lazing about in
his Panama City Beach-front condo, we'll put in a little more Duracool to
eliminate the cycling (sometimes more OFF than ON), at the cost of a little
warmer air. Unless we can find a switch with a lower cutout pressure,
preferably 15 psi or less.

Here is a repeat of a post I made in late Feb. of this year:
I copied this from the Jan.2012 issue of ASHRAE Journal (American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Airconditioning Engineers).
It looks like the EPA may finally be allowing some limited use of Propane type refrigerants in this country. The sky will fall, the world may go up in flames, but by god they are willing to try it! Now, note, this is not approval for Dura Cool in Automobile AC units, but it at least is getting closer, eh?
"3 Hydrocarbons Approved for Household Appliances
For the first time, the US Environmental Protection Agency has added three hydrocarbons as acceptable alternatives in household and small commercial refrigerators and freezers.
EPA took action after requests from Ben and Jerry's and General Electric, as well as A.S. Trust and Holdings, and True Manufacturing, a family owned small business. These businesses are helping clear the way for US companies to use ozone layer protective hydrocarbon refrigerants. Under the Clean Air Act, the EPA evaluates substitute chemicals and technologies for ozone depleting substances. The three hydrocarbon refrigerants approved as acceptable, with use conditions, are propane (R 290), isobutene (R 600) and a blend of propane, butane, and isobutane known as R 441a. These newly approved refrigerants are approved as replacements for the ozone depleting refrigerants R 12, R 22, and R 134a."
