Hi, Can someone PLEASE help me. The last time I had my GMC worked on, I took it to the mechanic with a Full tank of gas and the Gas Gauge worked. When I picked it up - the gas gauge no longer worked it read empty on FUEL and Past Full on Auxillary. It had sat behind the mechanics garage for several days & the first thing I thought of was the gas had been siphoned. We were leaving on a camping trip today, so not really knowing if I had gas or not - I decided to try to put a little gas in just in case because the nearest gas station from here is 45 miles. After pumping 20 gallons it started gurgling so I quit pumping. When I drove out of the driveway - I noticed that I left quite a bit of gas on the ground. Not knowing just what to do - I drove immediately over to the mechanics garage a few blocks away & beings it is Sunday, no one was there. I got down on the ground and looked underneath and the Gas Tanks were not leaking. Toward the Front, to the Left of the Muffler if you were standing behind the Motorhome - there was a steady run of gas coming from a round Hole in a Metal thing. This Metal thing has a round hole that looks like it has threads on it and should have a cap on it and is bigger than a quarter. It doesn't look like a hole that just developed there - but one that was made there for a purpose Keep in mind I am an elderly woman that knows NOTHING Mechanical. I immediately got a pitcher out of the camper and by this time it was just dripping steady so i waited to see if it would slow down and finally it quit dripping. I reached up in the hole to see if I could find out what this was and could feel something inside besides a lot of black gung. It feels like there is something up there like wet paper. Of course it started dripping again for a short while but then quit again. Can anyone tell me Why is the Gas Leaking from this Round Hole. Is the Fuel Filter anywhere near this? Of course with the Gas leaking out of this Hole - I was too worried to go any further and cancelled the Camping Trip - left the Motorhome in the Mechanics Driveway - unhooked the Tracker and came back Home.

Is that "round hole" in the bottom of the tank?
If so, each tank has one and it is a drain plug.
Look at the other tank in about the same position and you should see a plug. Most of the plugs used had a hex hole in it that would allow turning of the plug with an allen wrench. Sometimes the plug is rusted in and I have found that it can usually be turned by using a pipe wrench on the exposed threads.

It could be that your plug has corroded and is leaking.

Bess the black thing near the muffler is a carbon canister. The problem is the fuel seperator valve in the drivers side wheel well is stuck open. causing fuel to come out the vent line rather then only vapor. You can buy a new valve from Jim K. I have taken mine apart in the past and repaired it. A temporary fix so you can continue your trip would be to disconnect the rubber line coming to the valve and plug it with a 3/8" bolt and loosen the gas tank fill cap so the tanks are vented. You will smell a little gas coming from the tank but it won't leak at the canister then you can fix it when you get home.

I am going back up a little later and get a few things out of the Coach. I will look under it again. I don't think it is a Gas Tank, but I don't know. I know when I first bought it - the Mechanic had Both Gas Tanks off, Inspected and Cleaned them and put them back on. I sure will look under her to see if I find another one that has a plug in it. I am hoping it is not still leaking. Thank You

Hi, Thank You for Helping Me. After seeing this Gas Leaking - I was just too Worried to try to go any further. I am going to back and look to see if she is leaking in a little while - hopefully not. After seeing the Gas in the Driveway of the Gas Station - I was so scared that the 20 gallon I had just put in was all going to come out on the ground and was so releaved when it had stopped when I left her. Would this have anything to do with the Gas Gauge not working any more? Thank You for Your Help

Ms Bess: If it looks something like this
http://appliedgmc.com/prod.itml/icOid/858
It is a fuel selector valve for the "reserve" switch on the dash. If the mechanic has had the tanks and lines off he is familiar with this as it is fragile and usually a pain, and He may have replaced it. Definalely needs attention. I don`t know if It could have anystuff to do with the gauge not working??

Bes,

Where are you located now? I sounds to me as if you very badly need an
experienced GMCer to examine your coach "in person". You should not be
having this sort of trouble right after having a "professional" work on it.

Ms. Bess: We have a "Black" list.
http://www.bdub.net/Black_List/GMC_Assist_List.pdf
This was started by our friend Roger Black. It is a list of GMC owners and enthusiasts who are willing to help other GMC owners. Pls call someone close to you, Their name is on the list cause they want you to call them. If they can`t help they will know someone who can.

He is the parts and maintenance (repair) manuals for your coach. It is best to download all the year maintenance manuals as the early ones have sections that the later revised editions dont have. Just download to a GMC file you create in your documents for reference and pics on what is where and what is going on. Also a good idea to download to disc or flash drive to carry in the coach.

Hi, I am in Elevaston Illinois which is about 8 miles east of Keokuk Iowa which is in the southern most tip of Iowa. I went on a trip to Louisiana in March and had No Problems at all - and another trip to Rock Island Illinois in April. Since then there seems to be one problem after another. Thank You for Your Help.

Bes,

I show your town as having a population of 152. Surely there are other GMC
owners in such a metropolis?!

Just kidding. Seriously, you definitely need to check the Black List; I
don't know your area well enough to spot nearby owners, but do see one in
Biggsville, 50 miles away. It would certainly be worth trying to arrange
something with him -- his comments on the list make it apparent that he
should be able to help you.

Bessie called us again today. I discussed with her on the phone what was going on. She was who I was getting the trans filter number for last week. Thanks for the replies. Good information. Hoping to get her back up and going shortly. Just wish she lived closer.

It sounds like it's leaking directly under the filler neck. I found I've had to fill mine slowly so I don't get a 87 octane bath out the filler neck. Perhaps she's got some running out the vent line from that surge.

Did it stop after a few minutes,Bess? Are you sure you really lost the fuel you thought you did at the mechanic's shop?

If you don't have more fuel pouring out and it wasn't coming into contact with exhaust components, maybe the best thing to do would be to drive it some and switch the tank selector on the dash and see if the readings change. Maybe she could limp to a town with more expertise to offer.
