The left rear wheel on the Revcon froze up several times. It would drag through the grass but become unstuck once it hit pavement.
I pulled it apart to find fairly thick brake shoes and a badly scored brake drum.
It was both shoes- not the parking brake.
What's the most likely cause? Wheel cylinder?
thanks

This is definitely something to be concerned about. We had a coach at Bean Station that the left rear disc brake failed and overheated. The rotor was reduced to junk that you could peal apart like a news paper. The rotor was so hot the tire blew out from the heat after they pulled off the road. Fortunately he had a spare tire and could block off the brake line with a connector and plug. I have seen a lot of hot metal but never where the metal would crumble when you picked it up. Might be that a connector and plug would be a good thing to have, just in case. He was fortunate to have some one following and let him know about the problem.

Dave,
I reckon Emery's spot on.
Since (probably) none of us is familiar with the way the rear brakes on a
Revcon work I would suggest removing the other three drums and checking
everything out.
Also I would replace all the rubber lines to the front and rear brakes.
Regards,
Rob M.

Or perhaps a collapsed break hose which might be acting as a check valve
keeping pressure on the wheel cylinder.

Near as I can tell, both sytems are pretty much the same. But i only have two wheels in back.

Both shoes are used with the emergency brake, so do not over look the possibility of an e-brake problem.
It is also common for a rust film to form on both rotors and drums when parked. It the e-brake is engaged the shoes (or pads) will sometimes stick.
I'm not discounting the brake hose as your problem. I'm just suggesting another possibility.

A leaking cyl CAN cause that as well. Ask me how I know. The brake fluid keeps the brake waste material from going away as dust and makes a cement like compound that packs up on the friction material and as a glaze coating on the drum. Two things cannot occupy the same space at same time and it acts like way over adjusted rear shoes. Happend most recently on G body Regal and just touching the brakes would cause the right rear to lock as it was almost ready to without the brakes on. Walking by the rear wheel after a short low speed test drive in the neighborhood, the heat coming off the drum was like standing next to a radiator, so high speed driving would have resulted in melt down. Glad I cought it. Drag is... on those cars the backing plates are not pre knocked out for the deadjuster tool so you have to hammer them out first to deadjsut and get the drum off.

THere is WAY too much truth in that statement. And it's not likely to change much. We are heading to Ethiopia this summer for our second adoption. So no money and no time for the foreseeable future. But sooner or later this will be a fine vehicle to show to little boys (and the bride) this wonderful country.

Too Late. We brought the first one home three years ago.
We need to get him a brother or he will run us ragged.
