Does anyone have the part description or better yet a part number for the seal that the speedometer cable sits in on the transmission. The last one I bought was orange, but it replaced a gray colored one.

The problem is an annoying tranny drip that isn't the pan or modulator.

Ideas?

Randy,

I went through this several years ago, here's what I found.

In the GMC parts book on page 17-2 (picture) and 17-3 (part descriptions) look at part 19, the "sleeve assy, speedo drive gear". It's GM part number 404024 which crosses to Delco part 25519848 and both were obsoleted years ago.

Now the good news. When you remove the "sleeve assy, speedo drive gear" from the transmission you will see that the only wearable parts on it are the O-ring on the outside (available at any decent auto parts store) and the small lip seal, GM part 1240382 (available from any GM dealer), on the inside. Both rubber parts are easily replaced.

I don't see why GM wanted to sell an entire assembly when all that needs replacing are the rubber parts. Mine has been leak-free for several years now and the cost was probably just a few bucks.

I have the lip seal, viton o-ring, and speedo gears..
If the speedo gear shaft isn't grooved at the lip seal area, replacing
the o-ring and new seal will solve the leak. If the speedo gear is
grooved in that area, it needs to be replaced as well.

I used to brag about how leak free my coach was and how friendly to the environment I was because of that. Then a friend reminds me that at 8 MPG, I'm no freakin' environmentalist!

But you are. You are keeping a big lump out of the junk yard. Also consider the carbon footprint involved with making a new SOB MH, high mpg or otherwise. Also what is the environmental load of someone jumping on an airliner and flying 2000 miles for a vacation, renting a car, staying at hotels (with all their energy loads and laundry) vs traveling to a close vacation spot in the GMCMH.

BTW, unlike many of my posts, this comment is serious.

Exactly correct Steve, this fact is what drives our business.  We (the GMC) really is the "cheapest toy in the box".  The carbon has already been burned to produce the coach and really you should strive for 10 MPG, at that you are not burning much more fuel if any than a Suburban and heck, you can take a shower--- carry a pile of stuff and not have to rent a room full of bedbugs while travelling!  Why do you see people actually living in older motorhomes, they canot afford anything else which means it is a really cheap way to live!  Also, the carbon footprint thing really makes us a good choice for those who think through the issue.  Hey, a little dripping oil might make it back down underground-- maybe they could say we are doing our part to replentish the American oil supply!

I realize why a Prius gets such good mileage --the drivers all run 20mph under the speed limit Smile

I replaced the o-ring with one that should unquestionably seal (if the effort to install it is any indicator) and the lip seal has been replaced but it leaks worse than ever. Is there a seal on the end of the speedometer cable that could be missing too? My cable doesn't seem to want to tighten down to eliminate all play in the cable.

Inquiring minds would like to know, I recently developed a leak here too... I'm running a reduction gear for my 3.70FD, but it won't tighten, like its stripped...is this a repairable item?
The TH350 driven gear housing looks very similar...are they interchangeable?

Randy,
The cable is not the source of the leak.
The plastic gear that is housed inside the steel torpedo shaped device has
a red high silicon seal and an outer O ring.
Let me know as I have few her for sale, but since you have done so much for
our customers, I will send one to you N/C, just want the old as a core.

Thanks Jim! I've replaced both (although the new silicone seal from the Chevy Dealer is grey, not red. Maybe that's the problem) . I need to check the seal to see if the gear drive shaft has pushed the seal out of position.
