Took a drive to Carter Lake this evening in the GMC. My oil pressure gauge was reading at the 1/4 mark so I decided to pull over at a convenience store to check the oil level. I had a rag in my right hand as I was pulling out the dip stick I grabbed the end of the dip stick with my left hand and burned my thumb and finger tips on the rod. I never realized it could get that hot. So everyone be careful when checking hot engine oil.

that dip stick goes between the head and the exhaust manifold - very hot.

Someone posted pictures of a second tube, attached to the floor boards... going nowhere near the engine but with one end next to the end of the real dipstick tube. This "dipstick holster" would keep the dipstick handy but cool. It would only add two steps: The first and the last step, un-cap the true dipstick tube and re-cap it when done.

I remember about this modification when checking the oil when hot (normally happens on the road) and forget to put it on the list when at home. You just reminded me. THANKS! Cool

That's because the end of the dipstick is sticking into the oil in the sump
and I'd bet it's over 200 degrees F.

Oh yes!! I've seen smoke coming off mine. I think my dipstick is pemanently discolored in that area. No jokes either Smile

The work around is not to keep the dipstick in the engine. Keep a car dipstick in the engine and the real McCoy under the hood maybe in front of the radiator. When the engine is hot just pull the one out of the tube and stick in the cool real McCoy. It won't burn your fingers with that short trip in and out the engine . Very Happy

I gave up using my fingers to wipe the dipstick when I got married &
civilized. Now I use a rag. :-)
