This is Cherie, not Dean, as I'm faster at typing then he is. For the last few trips SunnyB has been making a rattling noise. It's not there when she's running in park, even if you rev her up. It's not there when you cruise through towns under 50mph. It happens when your accelerating but not until you hit about 50mph does it start rattling and it stays until you let off the accelerator but if you're still running 50 or more it comes back on acceleration. She just got new mufflers but she was doing this before those were put on. So, any input will be appreciated. And Thanks again.

Try putting it in neutral at that speed and see if it goes away.

Dean said, and I agree, the it sounds like it's under our feet, you don't hear it riding in the back. Accelerating would be under torque, right. But it only starts doing it around 45-50mph and quits when you let off the accelerator. Yes, uphill but we don't really use the accelerator downhill much. We haven't had the chance to drop her into neutral at that speed yet(as suggested) to see what happens but Sunday is looking like a I94 kinda day. We'll let you know. And hang with me as I ask this as I'm a semi-retired massage therapist not a mechanic. The only oil I changed was coconut, grapeseed or sweet almond! lol!

It could be the drive axles with "torque hop" which happens under high
load or torque.
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/cv-joint-problems/p7209.html
or
out of balance tires
or
lump on side of tire
or
wheel bearings
or
shocks
it it is torque hop, you can swap the drive axles side to side, and hope
no one has done it before you.

Any chance the exhaust it rattling against something? Preignition would only ping under load, not downhill. Change with engine speed or road speed?

i have the same sort of thing, not fan clutch, it maybe for me a/c bearing it sounds like a belt tensioner but gmc does not have one.
It seems to stay the same sound over 50 as well, very slight before that, mine may be different than yours. I have not had time to listen for it.
If you take a 4 foot hose and put it in the engine and to your ear, it may isolate the sound as a doctors listening device. It will blow a belt some day
if it is a bearing, or it could be a main bearing pray not on the engine going out. Lets not open that door yet. mine sound like a new years eve
sound spinner with high pitch, just enough to hear it but nothing ever gets worse so i can't figure it out yet. List all that can make noise.
fan clutch, a/c water pump, fuel pump, main bearing, all the wheels on the front, belt slipping, I bet mine is belt slipping. Thats it. i think.
THey have not been messed with for about 4 years and in the hot sun, i think that is my problem. M.

Dean and Cherie..
You may want to look over the air cleaner and snorkel -- may be a failed spot weld or debris in snorkel (do you have mud dabbers?) or something else loose.
At highway speed, under acceleration, there is a lot of incoming air, at pretty high velocity...

thats possible, and low on fluid. thank you, that could be it for it does not change
and could have evaporated to low fluid. thank you, i will check it out.
THE word main bearing gives me the hebbiejibees.
i have plenty of oil, It sounds like it is on the passenger side of the engine although. A/c bearing possible.
it has a jinggle like shearing sound like a roll of quarters throw in a bowl non stop, i have not had time from work to get to it.
good idea, to check. the power steering is on the drivers side i think.

Cherie,
Give me a call and I might ride with you on Sunday. We need to determine if it is engine associated or drive train associated.
Lot of things could cause this but before we guess too much lets see which half it is associated with. I could give you 10 guesses and maybe all of them would be wrong.
If you do not have my number, it is LOFS+4547. If you want to run on I-94 then I'll come up to Portage.
I picked up a used Honda Fit with 13K miles on it for my daughter Thursday. I just came in from the garage working on it. Lots of little stiff like change oil, adjust headlights adjust hood latch, etc. I discovered a leaking CV boot tonight. I need to get her Ham radio stuff installed but she is going to have to tell me where to drill the antenna holes.
We got 44 mpg bringing that car home from Ohio. My truck only got 24.5 following it on the same route. I'm really thinking about keeping the car and giving her my Blazer or truck. I can live with 44 mpg highway.
Oh yes, it is also automatic and towable.
I have not figured out how to adjust the headlights yet.
I'm hoping Honda will cover the CV boot under warranty.

Dean's on the phone with KenBurton right now. I just love living so close to him. We try to not to take advantage of that too often but when he offers his help I'll never turn it down. Thank you Laurie for letting us borrow him. We'll see what happens tomorrow.

""SERIOUSLY
It sounds to me like you have a Heat Riser Rattle ~
"'
No heat risers on these babies. It sounds like an engine related resonance that could be a loose belt or anything mounted on the engine like an aircleaner. It could also be the heatsheild on the LH exhaust manifold if you still have one.

It might just be a rod; sometimes they are very hard to pinpoint and the noise seems to come and go depending on how severe. How many miles on the engine?
