My other thread got hijacked (no surprise) so I started a new chapter here. Rolling Eyes

So I figured it out. Wasn't sure during the test, but 2500 RPM seemed awfully high for 38MPH, even with a few MPH error. I drove the coach today at 35-40 MPH indicated and RPM's were closer to 1500 RPM, about what I expected.

Either the numb-nuts who was driving my coach on the dyno with his hands off the wheel "Hey you have really good alignment" put it in "S" or the rollers don't load the coach enough to cause the coach to shift into 3rd, so it isn't really a real "cruise" test. Mad

I'm going back today with 20 gal of fresh gas in the tank Heated up to full operating temp (may not have been the other day) and talk to the manager about the problem, hope to get a second free retest, and tell the kid to go faster than 38 until it shifts into 3rd. If it Doesn't, I'll tell the kid to stop and get the station manager.

Time to make a chart of the RPM/MPH for the 3:50+3.21:1.

Chris,

Thrash the crap out of it on the way down there. "Blow the carbon out" That's what I generally try to do. I don't know if it actually helps, but it makes me feel better.

Chris--which station did you take it to?? Some here are much better than others. I see quite a few motorhomes at the Chandler/airport location

Bob, Mesa station at Dobson and Main. It is literally across the street (Dobson) from my storage space. I have it at the office today, will be nice and hot when I get there. I think I'll go elsewhere next year, If I don't have it registered at Steve's! Insurance may be the issue with that.

Carl, Oh, yeah, I always do that. I also run to emissions with the air filter out. Runs leaner that way. Always worked. Love the sound, wish I could run that way all the time. Perhaps someday I'll install a K&N.

HAH! Passed. Amazing what happens when you have the manager and supervisor run the test. Cost me another $19. I may dispute the charge since THEY screwed up.

BTW. 1500ish RPM at 37 MPH.

Pricks!!!

Chris,

If the manager and supervisor realize that the "kids" screwed up and you
acted magnanimous they'll "owe" you which might make your life easier the
next time you come in.

Congrats! Good for another year. Let's all hope they change that law again soon. It's ridiculous for us to have to have our classic coaches tested, especially when you consider how few local miles we put on them. I drive my coach around town more to get the emissions tested than I do any other time. Ironic, isn't it?

Rob, those folks cycle through those jobs so fast, it's not likely they will be there next year, but the one kid did tell the other one to goose the throttle at the start to get it to shift...

Chris,
Sorry for contributing to the hihack of your other thread. So do I read this right that you have to pass smog every year in AZ, and it's a dyno smog? At least here in Kalifornia, it's every two years and for some reason that I forgot about my '76 is exempt from the dyno just idle and some other higher rpm test.

ps congrats!

It depends on where you live, I live in Prescott and no smog check.
