I have an old plastic spare tire cover (the one with the GMC logo imprinted in the middle), and want to find a way to attach it a bit more securely than just using the little clamp that's on the bottom side.

Has anyone used a bolt or some other method of attaching these a bit more securely? I think that a long bolt through the middle into the spare tire holder would be a good idea and could be not too obtrusive, but I wanted to check if any other ideas were out there.

Thanks for any thoughts and advice!

Mine just has the clamp and a little Master lock.  It's been on there  for years, according to the PO.  When i went to wash the coach, it slipped off without opening the latch.  So, I wouldn't worry about it falling off.  Someone might steal it, but why?

I was trying to install mine that the PO gave me and was pounding it into place with a rubber hammer when I thought, this ain't ever coming off IF I get it all the way on. must be for a 16 inch wheel.
I am using the cloth cover.

On my former GMC, with 16" wheels, I adapted the 16.5" fiberglass cover to fit using the following method.
1. Place a piece of thin rubber (old floor mat, etc.) between the top of the tire and the cover. Drape it over the upper half of the tire.
2. Drill and mount two small "L" brackets on the sides of the cover. Then use a bunge cord, ran between the "L"'s and the back side of the tire.
Simple cheap and will stay in place.

Adam,

I bought several new 8.75*16.5 tires in 2008 just before a major excursion (good thing too). When the cover was recalcitrant about fitting the brand new spare, I wrapped the spare thread in waxed paper and the cover when on with only a serious push. The cover came off again easily enough when we had to change out a tire.

The current spare has some layers of carpet to make the cover fit well enough to stay on.
