ok, dumb question time: does the final drive have to be removed from
the coach in order to add limited slip? How difficult is the installation?

I'm trying to figure out if it makes more sense to pull the final drive
and take it in to have limited slip added, or bring the whole coach in.
(with a goal of minimizing cost, within reason)

thanks,

Again, I'm not an expert on anything here, but I don't think there is a way to add the limited slip components to the differential carrier without removing the carrier from the housing. Some aftermarket "lunch box lockers" can be added to a carrier in certain conventional drivetrain axles on four wheel drives, without removing the carrier, but most require the ring gear to be removed in order to access the pins that hold the diff gears in place. I suspect the differential needs to be completely dis-assembled to install the limited slip parts. Again, check with Jim K. I don't believe these components are available from any other source anyway.

Theoretically, you could replace the carrier without removing the pinion gear, but you would have to shim the carrier bearings just right, in order to get the backlash correct. Either way, I wouldn't see any way to do this in the vehicle. Bottom line, the FD does need to come out to accomplish this.

I believe Jim will credit you for the original cost of your 3.70 when you exchange for the limited slip.

Karen,

Simple version - NOT all the details!

1) remove both axles
2) remove passenger side axle extension
3) remove final drive
4) send final drive to Jim K
5) Jim K returns a final drive with the ratio you want and the limited slip
installed
6) install final drive
7) install passenger side axle extension
8) install both axles

Regards,
Rob M.
